Two British soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Two British soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan's restive Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence in London said on Friday.

Both soldiers were killed by "enemy action" in Helmand's Nad-e-Ali district, the ministry said.

The first was killed while on patrol on Thursday and the second died on Friday after he was hit while working on a construction task, it added.

The deaths bring to 424 the number of British troops killed since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. Of these, at least 384 died as a result of hostile action.

Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, making it the second-largest contributor to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force after the United States.

They are based in central Helmand, battling Taliban insurgents and training local security forces. Britain intends to pull out all its combat troops by the end of 2014.
