Social Media Courses: Installing Google Analytics on WordPress ...

Installing Google Analytics on WordPress

In this social media courses post, we discuss how important of a tool Google Analytics is for small business owners to use to track traffic on their websites. The information Google Analytics provides is invaluable in letting you know how many visitors are coming to your page, how they interact with it, where they came from, what keywords they used to find you, what content they think is most important, and so much more mission-critical information. In this post, we?ll go over how to install Google Analytics on your WordPress.org blog.

Signing Up For Google Analytics

First and foremost, you need to sign up for Google Analytics at http://www.google.com/analytics/. You can sign in using your Gmail address (or create one if you don?t have one already), and then click on the button that reads ?Sign Up?.

On the sign up screen, you will create an account name (anything you?d like), enter your web site?s URL, and then check the box stating that you agree with the Terms of Service. Once you have finished and click ?Create Account?, you?ll be given a Google Analytics Tracking ID number.

Adding the Tracking Number to Your WordPress Page

The instructions underneath your Tracking ID number give you a string of HTML code to copy and paste onto your site. This code must be added to your website?s header or footer so it can track your website and all of its sub-sites.

Fortunately, thanks to WordPress, you don?t have to deal with this HTML code and worry about editing HTML. All you need is your Tracking ID Number.

From your WordPress Dashboard, click ?Plugins? on the left-hand side of the screen and select ?Add New? from the drop down box. In the search box, type in ?Google Analytics for WordPress? and then click ?Search Plugins?.

The first plugin available is the one you searched for, ?Google Analytics for WordPress?. Install and activate this plugin. On the Plugins screen, you?ll be prompted to select which Analytics Profile to track; click on the link in the prompt to reach a ?Google Analytics Settings? screen.
From here, you can sync your Google Account by either clicking on the button to ?Authenticate with Google? or by checking the box to manually enter your UA code (the Tracking ID number) that you have ready. Once you?ve done that, click ?Update Google Analytics Settings?; and just like that, you are ready to go!

It will take a few hours for Google?s crawlers to sync your website to your Google Analytics profile. But it won?t be very long before you have access to a wealth of knowledge about the incoming traffic on your web site!
