iPhone 5 to have iPad 3 chipset

And other rumours including one about Everything Everywhere and a potential 4G exclusive

There?s been more news on the iPhone 5, as we near the handset?s unveiling which is due to take place on September 12 (unless a lot of rumour mongers are very, very wrong).

The latest bits of speculation include the fact that the iPhone 5 will apparently use the same chipset as the current-generation iPad. Or the iPad 3, as we call it from time to time (just to annoy Apple).

In other words, it will be powered by the same A5X dual-core processor, twinned with the quad-core GPU seen in the iPad. While some might be disappointed by that, you also have to remember that Apple is constantly honing its software to complement that hardware power. Yes, iOS 6 will of course be out on the iPhone 5.

This particular report comes from Trusted Reviews, who spotted a photo of the smartphone?s innards, and it pours cold water on other speculation that the new iPhone might have a quad-core processor in order to keep up with the Android Joneses.

As we?ve already said, though, the iPhone 5 is unlikely to be a slouch when it comes to the need for speed. Apple?s not likely to make a rookie mistake such as that.

Another rumour is the smaller dock connector for the smartphone, and a purported pic of the USB charging cable has been leaked ? and indeed it does look like it?s much smaller, making for more space inside the iPhone 5.

Finally, it seems that there?s a very interesting snippet of speculation from Pocket Lint regarding the UK and the release of the 4G LTE version of the iPhone. What?s that you say ? it?s pointless, seeing as this country doesn?t have any 4G networks yet?

Well, not yet it doesn?t, but Everything Everywhere just got permission from Ofcom to start using its existing 1800MHz spectrum. And it just so happens that Everything Everywhere will kick off its 4G, sending it live, on September 11.

The day before the iPhone 5?s launch ? coincidentally? Or is Apple going to do a tie in with Everything Everywhere in the UK. No other network will be able to carry a 4G LTE phone, of course? and that would technically give Everything Everywhere an exclusive on the iPhone.

But then, surely the other networks would be going bananas? so we?ll take that with a hefty pinch of salt.

The iPhone 5 is also expected to come with a 4 inch display, and to be a thinner device thanks to an in-cell touchscreen. Other rumours have suggested that this technology is proving to be a problem in terms of volume production for the screens ? so we might see some stock shortages (which is about par for the course, really).
