Common sense on common math standards for STEM education ...

(With this post I inaugurate a series of occasional items tagged ?quick takes,? in which I?ll link to and offer short reaction to events or documents that touch on my areas of interest, though possibly not directly enough to permit full commentary at an acceptable level of quality.)

There?s more common sense about K12 math instruction in this fascinating dialogue posted at Education Next than in the math sections of the recent report on STEM education?by the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). The PCAST report correctly identifies poor math preparation as a key barrier to retaining college students in Science, Technology, Engineering &?Mathematics?(STEM) disciplines, but then utterly fails to reference or take a position on any of the ongoing debate over math standards. It simply blandly recommends a ?national experiment? in effective math instruction. On the other hand, Education Next ? apparently some kind of collaboration between Stanford and the Harvard Kennedy School ? appears to be a website worth watching, and I will.

Meanwhile, the images of the female pelvic cavity were observed meticulously. After being registered accurately with Photoshop 7.0 software, the sectional images of the data set of anatomical structures in female pelvic cavity were reconstructed with 3D DOCTOR 3.5 and 3D Lancet 2.0 software on personal computer. With the support of visualization software Virtual Reality 1.0 which was provided by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and 3D Lancet 2.0 which was developed by our research group, the data set of the female pelvic cavity was visualized and displayed in three-dimensional space on personal computer. Palin on Alaska job: I can't take it anymore

The state of Alaska on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 released what officials say are the last of Sarah Palin's emails from her time as governor. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

(AP) ? Fed up with mounting legal bills and rattled by intense scrutiny of her family and work, Sarah Palin was ready to step down as Alaska's governor months before she left office in July 2009.

Emails released Thursday, most from the last 10 months of her time in office, show she told her husband in April, "I can't take it anymore" and complained to spokeswoman Sharon Leighow and aide Kris Perry in March that she had been the target of "many frivolous suits and charges since the DAY I became VP candidate."

"I can't afford this job," she wrote.

The emails illustrate what Palin has said all along: After running for vice president unsuccessfully with John McCain, she returned to Alaska to find that the financial and emotional drain of her gubernatorial job was too much. She flirted with a presidential run last year, but told supporters she instead was dedicating herself to "God, family and country." She currently serves as a commentator on Fox News.

In a March 19, 2009, email, Palin complained that more than 150 freedom of information requests had cost the state more than $1 million, adding: "and who knows what all the bogus ethics charges have cost the state."

She expressed anger at having to pay for her own defense, with a bill that at that point totaled more than $500,000, and said her husband had to go back to work on the North Slope to help deal with the growing costs.

"We've all had to pay for our OWN legal defense in this political bloodsport ? it's horrendous ? why do you think Todd is on the slope today?" Palin wrote. "I am paying to defend in my capacity as GOVERNOR ? actions taken in my official position. This is unheard of anywhere else."

By the spring of 2009, the emails show, Palin was regularly butting heads with lawmakers of both parties over her absences from the Capitol.

"It's unacceptable, and there must be push back on their attempts to lame duck this administration," Palin wrote to her top aides on April 9.

Citizens and news organizations, including the AP, first requested Palin's emails in September 2008, as part of her vetting as the Republican vice presidential nominee. The state released a batch of the emails last June, a lag of nearly three years that was attributed to the sheer volume of the records and the flood of requests stemming from Palin's tenure.

The 24,199 pages of emails that were released last year ended in September 2008, as she was campaigning with GOP presidential nominee John McCain. Thursday's release includes 17,736 records, or 34,820 pages, generally spanning from October 2008 until Palin's resignation as Alaska governor, in July 2009.

Tim Crawford, treasurer of Sarah Palin's political action committee, said Thursday the emails "show a governor hard at work for her state."

Palin said a series of ethics complaints filed against her contributed to her decision to step down. In an April 2009 email, she commiserated over a story indicating another ethics complaint was to be filed: "Unflippinbelievable... I'm sending this because you can relate to the bullcrap continuation of the hell these people put the family through," she wrote to aides Ivy Frye and Frank Bailey.

Later that day, in an email to her husband and two top aides, on the issue, she said: "I can't take it anymore."

Earlier, after a Feb. 18, 2009, Washington Post story titled, "Back Home in Alaska, Palin finds cold comfort," was pointed out to her, she emailed her husband. "Would you pray for our strength. And for God to totally turn things around... Enough is enough. May we see victories and feel His hand of mercy and grace." He replies, "I did."

The emails indicate her job had taken a toll on her marriage long before she even became McCain's running mate.

In a Sept. 26, 2007, email to Kris Perry and her husband Todd, titled "Marital Problems," Palin writes: "So speaking of... If we, er, when we get a divorce, does that quell "conflict of interest" accusations about BP?" Her husband was a former BP employee on the North Slope.

J. Cole, Eminem, 2 Chainz Just Missed 'Hottest MCs' Cut

T.I., Young Jeezy and Fabolous also enjoyed success in 2011 but fell short of MTV News' top 10.
By Rob Markman

J. Cole
Photo: C. Brandon/ Redferns

MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game debate isn't solely about the 10 MCs who make the hotly contested list.

Before MTV News' Hip-Hop Brain Trust convenes at the roundtable, each member submits his or her own individual list of 10 MCs they'd like to nominate for the discussion. After all of the nominees are tallied, approximately 20 rappers are taken into consideration; the artists with the most nominations are weighted at the top.

So outside the 10 chosen, MTV had a handful of other MCs to consider based on a combination of criteria like impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, style (commonly referred to as swag) and the intangibles. Though Maybach Music Group's Wale eventually had his #10 spot cemented, many were considered.

Now, MTV News presents our Hottest MCs honorable mentions:

J. Cole
J. Cole had a phenomenal 2011. His debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, has gone gold and yielded a platinum single with "Work Out." Cole, who was once an underground favorite, broadened his fanbase by touring with Rihanna on her Loud Tour.

T.I.
Tip might have gotten off to a late start, since he was released from prison at the very end of September, but the King of the South wasted no time getting back into the swing of things. Immediately after finishing his bid, Tip jumped on some of the hottest songs in rap, creating his own remixes to 2 Chainz's "Spend It," Future's "Magic" and the Throne's "N---as in Paris." Tip capped it all off on New Year's Day when he dropped his F--- Da City Up mixtape.

Eminem
Last year, Eminem stood as the #1 Hottest MC in the Game. It was hard to deny him after 2010's Recovery dominated the charts. Em's lyrical ability is never a question, and in 2011, King Mathers once again proved that very few (if any) can match him on the mic. Rather than churn out the commercial smashes he is known to make, Em took things back to the underground and hooked up with Royce Da 5'9" for their fan-favorite Bad Meets Evil EP Hell: The Sequel.

Young Jeezy
It may have taken the Snowman a minute to put out his long-awaited TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition album, but Jeezy wasn't just sitting around twiddling his thumbs. While fans salivated for his major-label release, Young fed the streets with a pair of DJ Drama-helmed mixtapes in 2011. (The Real Is Back and The Real Is Back 2). By the time Jeezy finally released his latest installment from his Thug Motivation series in December, he had earned himself a #1 rap album.

2 Chainz
A little artistic reinvention never hurt anybody. The MC formerly known as Tity Boi broke out from his group Playaz Circle and embarked on a solo mission that paid huge dividends. As 2 Chainz, the ATL standout fired up the streets with mixtapes like Codeine Cowboy and T.R.U. Realigion. With street bangers like "Spend It" under his belt, 2 Chainz stood as the poster child for rap's underground and then cashed in when he signed his major-label deal with Def Jam this month.

Fabolous
With or without an album, Brooklyn's Fabolous consistently slays his completion. Fab didn't release his Loso's Way 2 LP, but he did serve his fans a dose of that raw with his Christmas Day mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3's. On the tape, Funeral Fab goes in, freestyling over beats made famous by Tyga, Travis Porter and, of course, 2 Chainz. By the end of the 15-track ride, Fab proved that he is eternally hot no matter what his competitors may throw at him.

How Much Do You Value Life? : Business networking tips and ...

How Much Do You Value Life?

Henry David Thoreau said ?The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.?

How valuable is your life and how much of your life are you willing to exchange to live a legacy of greatness in the world?

Some people who are lost in the exigencies of life, do not take the time to answer to this question, while other?s are just too side-tracked or lazy to even ask.

Each one of us is born on purpose and with a purpose. Not one of us was put on this earth without a seed of greatness within us. We each have an extremely valuable contribution to make with our lives. So how do some of us learn to understand this truth, while others appear to remain blind to it?

I think that a great deal of this comes out of us learning how to give and that there is something greater than ourselves to be concerned about. So many people are lost in the petty problems of their small existence. When we get outside of ourselves, we realize that our lives here are limited and that time is a currency we are foolish to waste.

The world needs all of us. It needs our gifts, our talents, our love, our insights, our wisdom and our genius.

Bill Strickland, Founder of the Manchester Craftsman?s Guild, and MacArthur ?genius award?? winner tells us:

?The Value of life can be measured by one?s ability to affect the destiny of one less advantaged. Since death is an absolute certainty for everyone, the important variable is the quality of life one leads between the times of birth and death.?

How will you choose to love the time between your birth and your death? What difference were you put on the earth to make? Share with us, your thoughts on life and its value to you, below.

What the Hell is a 'Social Business' and Why Should You Care ...

Social Business, Social Media, Brand advocacy, Mack Collier

If you?ve been following the social media marketing space/blogosphere over the last year or so, you?ve probably heard increasing chatter about the concept of ?Social Business?.

So what IS a Social Business? ?Good question, and it seems one that not even the people chattering about it can agree upon. ?For example, The Wikipedia definition states ?social business?is a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective within the highly regulated marketplace of today. It is distinct from a non-profit because the business should seek to generate a modest profit but this will be used to expand the company?s reach, improve the product or service or in other ways to subsidise the social mission.?

Ok?but here?s how @Armano describes it ?At it?s core, it?s about connecting stakeholders who are critical to the success of your business. And as I?ve stressed before?it?s about executing initiatives leveraging the ?3 P?s??People, Process & Platforms.? ?David also has a nifty drawing that helps explain the process at that link.

And here?s Augie Ray?s definition: ?A new form of commerce where consumers, empowered by new social technologies and behaviors, bypass traditional channels and acquire more information, goods and services directly from each other.?

Finally, here?s how the Social Business Forum defines a Social Business: ?An organization that has put in place the strategies, technologies and processes to systematically engage all the individuals of its ecosystem (employees, customers, partners, suppliers) to maximize the co-created value?

?

Three things I see from the above and other various definitions I?ve found for the term ?Social Business?:

1 ? We can?t even agree on the definition of the concept. ?Which is no biggie, most of us can?t agree on the definition of ?Social Media? and it?s been around for 25 years in some form or another.

2 ? The name ?Social Business? is terrible in that it immediately makes you think ?Oh I get it, a business that does social media!? ?Seriously, we marketers and business types put the ?social? modifier on waaaaay too many things.

3 ? These definitions (and much of the discussion around the concept) seem to be focused on the companies that ?get it? when it comes to?whatever your definition of a ?social business? is. ?If you?re a business that doesn?t ?get it?, is talking about how becoming a social business will help you ?engage with and empower your customers to increase co-created value? REALLY going to get you excited? ?I mean companies have been hearing about the potential of empowering and embracing their customers for at least 5 years now when we all got on a kick about how amazing social media is. ?Right? ?If that talk didn?t blow their skirts up, changing the name from ?social media? to ?social business? and trying again probably won?t either.

?

BTW here?s another interesting tidbit, the Wikipedia definition of the term ?Enterprise 2.0?:?Enterprise 2.0?is the use of ?Web 2.0? technologies within an?organization?to enable or streamline?business processes?while enhancing collaboration ? connecting people through the use of?social-media?tools. Enterprise 2.0 aims to help employees, customers and suppliers collaborate, share, and organize information.?Andrew McAfee?describes Enterprise 2.0 as ?the use of emergent social software platforms within companies, or between companies and their partners or customers?.

Ah we marketers do love to mark our territory by slapping labels on everything, don?t we?

But perhaps the biggest problem I have with most of the discussion around the concept of a ?Social Business? is that it seemed to be geared toward selling companies on the concept, versus the actual business benefits of integrating/embracing the concept.

Last month when I spoke at Bazaarvoice, I got to spend some time talking to CMO Erin Nelson and I learned more about BV?s offerings and how the companies is helping its clients. ?In general, Bazaarvoice is creating products and systems that let clients get more detailed and relevant (read: valuable) product information and feedback, and then helping them ACT on that feedback, both internally and externally, in order to improve existing business processes.

A very simple example: ?Erin noted that LL Bean tracked the reviews customers were leaving on their site for a popular sweater, and they noted that customers were asking for it to be produced in the colors green and purple. ?So LL Bean started offering the sweater in those colors as well, and sales doubled as a result. ?And the great thing about getting and ACTING on customer feedback is that it only encourages your customers to leave MORE feedback, which increases the chance that you can continue to improve existing business functions as a result.

That one small example to me does more to explain the possible reason why a company would want to become more connected ?internally and externally because it details a real-world business benefit from doing so.

As a result, I think those of us that are talking about the concept of a ?Social Business? need to stop talking about it as if we are selling a concept/product, and start talking about it as if we are selling the BENEFITS of being a Social Business. ?Because that?s what you SHOULD be doing, and besides, that?s a far more interesting conversation to be having anyway.

'Talking dictionaries' help keep languages alive

Many of the world's minority languages, some spoken by only a handful of speakers, are on the brink of extinction, and community activists and scientists are teaming to try to keep them alive.

One example is the Native American language Siletz Dee-ni, which was once spoken widely by native people in Oregon, but which now may be spoken fluently by only one man: Alfred "Bud" Lane.

    1. Answers lie ahead for physics' biggest mysteries

"We're a small tribe on the central Oregon coast," Lane said via telephone here at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. "Like most small groups of people, our pool of speakers has been reduced over a period of time, until the 1980s when very few speakers were left. Linguists labeled it 'moribund.'" [Q&A: Dead Languages Reveal a Lost World]

But Lane and his community decided to fight back.

Talking dictionaries
"We devised a plan to go forward and begin teaching our dialect on the reservation," Lane said. Now schoolchildren in the Siletz Valley School learn Siletz Dee-ni two days a week. Lane said they're picking it up faster than he ever hoped.

Still, the coast isn't clear. Whether Siletz Dee-ni can become spoken well enough, and by a large enough group of people to continue being used in daily life, remains to be seen.

"Language extinction is not an inevitability, although it is a very strong trend that is going on right now," said K. David Harrison, a linguist at Swarthmore College who worked with Lane to assemble an online talking dictionary of more than 14,000 words in the Siletz Dee-ni language.

The dictionary, sponsored by National Geographic's Enduring Voices project and the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages, is just one of many records that linguists are compiling to preserve the world's dwindling collection of endangered languages before it's too late.

What we stand to lose
As native peoples assimilate more and more into the dominant cultures around them, and as younger generations grow up speaking dominant languages like English in school and with their peers, fewer and fewer people are becoming fluent in native tongues. In the past, government repression of native languages and ethnic shame has also seriously hindered the survival of these languages, researchers on a panel here said.

But if the world loses these languages, it loses more than just another way of saying the same thing, experts argue.

There is a "vast knowledge base, knowledge of plants, animals, how to live sustainably, that is contained uniquely in those languages," Harrison said. "We are all enriched when small language communities choose to share their knowledge."

Studying the languages also teaches linguists new language patterns, and helps preserve other elements of native culture such as foods and traditions.

Teetering on the brink
But what does it take for a threatened language to stay alive?

Margaret Noori, a professor at the University of Michigan and a speaker of Ashininaabemowin, the native language of the Ojibwe people indigenous to the Great Lakes area, not only speaks the native language, she also sings and writes poetry in Ashininaabemowin. [Recording: Ashininaabemowin Song]

"For it to be considered alive, we need to be creating in it," Noori told LiveScience. "Otherwise it's like studying Latin."

Noori teaches Ashininaabemowin language classes at the University of Michigan, and runs a website, Ojibwe.net, to collect recordings of Ashininaabemowin speakers. She also harnesses social media such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to spread the word about the language.

Still, despite the hard efforts of many people, the continued survival of Ashininaabemowin is not assured.

"If I'm honest, statistically, I'd say it doesn't look very good," Noori said. She estimates there are fewer than 15,000 speakers of the language left, and possibly as few as 5,000. Eighty percent of Anishinaabemowin speakers are older than 65.

Despite the odds, though, she and other native language advocates don't plan to give up.

"We have a whole new generation of people coming up that sing our songs, learn our traditions," Lane said. "We were teetering on the brink, and I think we've finally turned the corner and reversed that now."

>> reporter: it's a new kind of mobile home . a three bedroom ranch once headed for demolition.

>> it's a home. yeah. it's close.

Ara parrots ? why to have them as pets

A pair of? Ara parrots always fascinates anyone, not just birdAra parrots-lovers. They manage to create you that feeling of happiness because they are already well-known for the intensity of their feathers? colours. Unfortunately ,they are mostly found in zoos. This is the only way they can color our lives. Their species has many subspecies, some of which being extremely common and in a large number others, on the verge of extinction.

Why are these? Ara parrots so interesting, leaving aside their color, fact I have already mentioned? Well they have a? large size, most of them heaving the performance to touch even a length of 1 m. Much of that, the tail is longer than their body. They originate from Mexico and Central America to the south of Brazil. Ara macao is one of those subspecies which can reach also a length of 80 cm and live up to 50 years because it is a gregarious bird. It seems that it can learn to speak only if it gets enough attention and time for socializing. But on the other hand it is loud and gets attention and if it doesn?t receive it, it gets bored, so its time must? be filled somehow? ( you can buy toys). Not at last , these Ara parrots have unique feathers, which again shows how special they are.

For those who want to have one at home, specialists suggest us that is that very important to observe? which kind of bird best fits you. For exemple, the most common Ara in captivity is Ararauna, already known as? Ara with the yellow chest, native from? Amazon.

It is extremely beautiful, mentally developed, a good observant and affectionate, fact which recommends choosing it as a pet bird. Its behavior reminds of a dog?s habit. Which of those incredible Ara parrots are not recommended as a pet-bird? Well it?s the red-blue one! Firstly it is less-loving and it has the bad habit to break and chew everything made of wood.

Continuing the list which does not recommend it? as a pet bird, we add the fact that it?s a noisy one, and it?s silent only when it needs to climb using its beak for this. Looking at those sounds which these birds use in one way or another, it is a modality to decide if we want them as pet birds or not because despite of their beauty ,this habit may not make pur live simpler. We we may end up being negligent to the bird by fixing the cage in a remote place and try to prevent it of screaming.

Regarding the strong sounds when we talk about Ara subspecies, we really want to acquire and look after it, we must be careful and analyse the significance of their screams. For these birds it?s a modality to communicate with the wilderness in them, but in captivity they add and use this kind of languge to speak with us. Ara flyingSo they can make certain sounds if someting is missing(food)or if they don?t have the fruits neccesary-in such a way to determin the owner to offer the thing they want the most-because in their wild-life they can procure it alone. They also can ?scream? if someone strange appears in the house, considering that his presence is a danger, trying to atract attention on this.Their scream must be a modality of crying overr the disappearance of the pair if this often happens and it?s also a modality to draw the attention when it gets bored. Play with it, keep it busy in such a way to make it not make noise and you? ll feel happy with it?s company.

If these parrots can?t be kept? in your appartement or you have another posibility, they prefer also the loft life. In this way they have much space, more posibilities to play, and not last its feathers won?t be? affected. Beside the fact that they ceerful, they relax us when we are in their company. The stunning Ara parrots can be used in a great way and not last they can play an important role like animals like dogs and cats ,being? used as a? therapy pet. Through the fact that these parrots are sociable,? they can help us release the stress, preventing the diseases which affect the nervous system, like depression. So you shouldn?t hesitate to aquire them, because life? will definitely have a different colour.

One Love: Marley film has Berlin critics crowing (omg!)

BERLIN (Reuters) - Oscar-winning documentary maker Kevin Macdonald has made what critics are calling the definitive biography of reggae legend Bob Marley, aided by the singer's family and record label who have given the project their blessing.

The first authorized film of his life had its premiere at the Berlin film festival, and while questions about Marley remain, it goes some way to revealing the man behind the myth.

"I just felt like there weren't any good films about him and a lot of misinformation," Macdonald told Reuters this week.

"I wanted to make a very simple film. It's the most conventional film I think I ever made, very straight forward, just trying to be a detective and uncover the truth about his life and the truth about his character."

"Marley," too long for some reviewers at 144 minutes, features interviews with Marley's children, his wife Rita, friends and a former bandmate, as well as concert footage.

And with his record label Island also on board, the soundtrack speaks for itself.

The film traces Marley's well-documented journey from a boy born in a small village in Jamaica to a music superstar who brought reggae and the Rastafari movement to a global audience.

He died of cancer in 1981 aged 36.

It explores how Marley was troubled by his mixed-race heritage, the source of bullying when he was a child, and how his many affairs and children out of wedlock took its toll on wife Rita and their daughter Cedella.

Marley had 11 children by seven mothers, according to several accounts of his life.

"Discussion of such insecurities, in addition to tart descriptions of his domestic life from his wife, mistresses and children, does much to dispel the widely held notion of Marley as a kind of blissed-out naif," wrote Guy Lodge in his review of the film for Hollywood publication Variety.

He added, however, that "Macdonald can't resist one too many shots of the vital, verdant Jamaican landscape to re-romanticize things a little."

LEGACY

Key interviewees include Bunny Wailer, a surviving founding member of Marley's band the Wailers. Afterwards the narrative is taken up by Neville Garrick, the Wailers' artistic director.

Garrick recalled Marley's frustration at the toll his illness took towards the end.

"He had a stroke on one side so he couldn't play his guitar anymore and I think that kind of frustrated him," he said.

"Besides, he lost his locks, that all came with the chemotherapy. But being not able to function 100 percent, I think that really hurt him.

"I don't know, maybe he said, like, you know, Jah Rastafari God, what did I do, why are you making me suffer like this? All I did was serve you."

For Marley's son Rohan, the film was a way of keeping his father's legacy alive. At a press conference, he described how having a superstar father was not always easy.

When he and his brother were playing in their home as children, he recalled, two boys approached the gates.

The Marley brothers told them to leave, saying that day they had their father to themselves. The singer overheard the conversation, gave his sons money and told them to buy ice creams for the boys but none for themselves.

"We may call him Daddy, but we're just one of the many," Rohan said.

An Iraqi in my Home ? Balloons Over Baghdad

February 15, 2012

One of the great benefits to being a filmmaker is traveling the world and experiencing different?cultures. ?My wife and children hear the stores and see the pictures but they rarely get to live out my adventures with me. ?Last month that all changed.

I received a phone call from the Goodwill Ambassador of Iraq, Fareed Lafta. ?He had been traveling all over the United States and he was going to make a brief stop in our little high desert town of Bend, Oregon. ?We opened our home to him and it was such a blessing to?finally?have my family?experience?a bit of what I do when I?m?trekking about the globe.

I?m sure Fareed is used to staying in hotel rooms with more square footage than my modest home but he seemed to have a great time. ?For 3 days he was more than a guest, he was a part of our family. ?He read books to my boys, ventured into the snowy mountains with me and learned classic American card games like spoons.

It might not have been as upscale as dinner with Prince Albert but I hope Mr Lafta felt at home.
