MiniTime Trip Planning Website Family Travel Ideas

There?s such an overwhelming amount of travel information in the world, it?s beneficial to be able to narrow down your sources to solidly reliably ones. For parents planning family vacations, a new contender, MiniTime, is sure to come to the head of the pack. This post is sponsored by MiniTime, and in as such, I?ve given myself ample time to familiarize myself with the family travel site.

MiniTime Trip Planning Website for Family Travel ideas According to Think with Google, the five stages of travel are dreaming, planning, booking, experiencing, and, post-trip, sharing. 85% ? a huge percentage ? of leisure travelers use the internet as their main source for planning travel. So not only am I not the only one, I?m not even NEARLY the only one who spends hours mucking around online, narrowing down destination possibilities and hotel choices. Since the bulk of my leisure travel is done with my family, I?m really happy to have MiniTime as a new ?mucking around? site. MiniTime is a new family travel planning and booking site; it has TripAdvisor-esque user-generated reviews and ratings, and more in-depth family-friendly hotel/resort/inn/activity reviews written by family travel specialists.

MiniTime is, like I said, a pretty new site. But I love its pedigree. The guys who created its algorithms that filter ratings are the same smarty-pants that created a few dating sites, later bought by and integrated into JDate. Like a dating site, MiniTime has a filter. In this case, though, it filters though the large assortment of lodging options (and child-friendly activities) by destination and the ages of the users? children. After all, this is a family travel site, not a dating site! MiniTime also helps the user ? the mother or father, presumable ? book vacations and later, the MiniTime member can leave brief reviews and load in some relevant photos from their trip.

MiniTime Trip Planning Family Vacation Plans hotel reviews

While I haven?t booked travel through MiniTime, there is a function that allows users to find the best deals online (through parters) and book their stays. Just from noodling around, I found that there can be a large disparity in price options listed. For example, I selected a resort in Carlsbad for an imaginary LEGOLAND vacation (my kids are actually much too old to enjoy LEGOLAND anymore, though Carlsbad itself is a very pretty beach town). For my family of four requesting two rooms at the resort, one site (Skoosh) listed a $228 price, the other (Venere), $837. I?ll let you guess which booking site I?d have chosen. It?s clear that MiniTime saves time researching travel deals.

The site interface is generally very easy to navigate, and the algorithm sorts well by age and destination. I do wish it was simpler to figure out a couple of things, though. One, it?s not obvious to find how to ?follow? a different user (unless that other user is already following you). You?ll need to go to that user?s profile page to do so. Two, it?s not possible to create a rating and review for a hotel, resort, or inn that?s not already in MiniTime?s database, or to create the page for it yourself so that you can review it. And three, not all countries are represented. In fact, at this time, there is a heavy bias toward the United States, Canada and?Mexico. But wait! Remember, this is a new site! The more travel planners use it (and create the reviews, and rate hotels, etc), the more fleshed-out it will be. I?ll be happy to watch MiniTime grow and, possibly, give some competition to that other travel-planning site, TripAdvisor. I love the simplicity of the navigation and the ease with which photos ? even huge ones ? load up to it.

MiniTime Family Trip Planning Interface family travel advice

Try MiniTime for yourself; you don?t have to sign up as a member to avail yourself of its algorithm or navigate around the site. Plug in your children?s ages, where you want to go, and then request either a destination overview or local accommodation options. Click ?Bring the Kids,? and blammo. Instant results, and other suggested options as well. If even this sounds like too much of a commitment, click ?Take a Tour? on the main page. There?s short video that?ll show you around. There is also a ?Trip Tips? section, with useful family travel service pieces such as packing tips and road trip game ideas.

You can see my reviews of the Grand Wailea in Maui, Craftsman Inn in Fayetteville, and Homewood Suites in Miami for some examples of these brief user-generated write-ups. So far, the other users have created an amiable, easygoing site culture. MiniTime will even cut down on your ?mucking around? time spent planning travel online.?I like what I see, and I?m pretty sure you?ll like it, too.

Google Facing Legal Action In UK Over 'Safari-Gate' | WebProNews

Google continues to deal with the fallout from ?Safari-gate? privacy scandal that led to a record fine (for a single company) from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission last August. The company was fined $22.5 million.

Now, iPhone users in the UK are getting together to sue Google over the debacle. The Guardian reports:

At least 10 British iPhone users have started legal proceedings and dozens more are being lined up, according to Dan Tench, the lawyer behind the action at the London-based firm Olswang.

?This is the first time Google has been threatened with a group claim over privacy in the UK,? he said. ?It is particularly concerning how Google circumvented security settings to snoop on its users. One of the things about Google is that it is so ubiquitous in our lives and if that?s its approach then it?s quite concerning.?

There is a Facebook Group called ?Safari Users Against Google?s Secret Tracking,? which has been set up by the law firm in connection with the users who are going after Google. In the ?About? section, the description says:

This group has been set up to provide information for anyone who used the Safari internet browser between September 2011 and February 2012, and who was illegally tracked by Google.

Any users in the UK may have a claim against Google for this breach of their privacy. Other users, who have set up this group, are taking action against Google to hold them to account.

?

Members of this informal group have instructed the leading technology and media law firm, Olswang, to begin an action against Google.

If you have concerns or want to join the action, contact us via this group and we will share your views or put you in touch with the legal team.

It will be interesting to see how many users get on board with this, and what it ends up meaning for Google. A press release from Olswang has more on the case.

Immigration crime about to see its payday - Legal Insurrection

Question of Day ? Are 2nd Amendment rights not equal to squatters? rights?

From CBS News, some news and a rewrite of history as to ?immigration reform?:

A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation?s immigration laws.

The deal, which was to be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation?s inefficient patchwork of immigration laws?.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona?.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn?t get enough GOP support.

That last paragraph is a rewrite of history.? Immigration reform was killed because of poison pills put in the legislation by Democrats (including Barack Obama) supported by some Republicans (including Jim DeMint).? Just another example of how the media, out of ignorance or worse, skews history to blame Republicans.

How big a payday this is for immigration crime depends on what the pathway to citizenship ends up being.

Regardless, it?s a payday because people who violated our laws to get here get to stay without consequence and get a pathway to citizenship.? That pathway takes immigration reform from some sort of humanitarian and practical solution to rewarding illegality.

It makes suckers of all the people who?followed?the rules and are on the other side of the borders and oceans because they didn?t want to become criminals.

Once again we send the message that immigration crime pays.? Apparently that is good politics.

Question of the Day ? Will violators of gun laws not connected to commission of?some other crime be given amnesty like immigration law violators?? Or are 2nd Amendment rights not equal to squatters? rights?

Update:? By the way, the comparison to squatters? rights is not something I thought up, it?s a theory advanced by former Cornell (and now U. Chicago) law professor Eduardo Pe?alver, who has written a book on the contribution of squatters to the development of property law, and who views?application of such theories?as a positive development as related to immigration law:

The better analogy is with the twin doctrines of adverse possession and prescription. These doctrines, which are virtually universal in systems of private property, recognize that possession or use of property that goes on for a long enough period of time should eventually be recognized as legal, even if they were illegal when they began. In most states, even an act of intentional squatting will ripen into full-blown property ownership after roughly seven to ten years.

TORONTO (AP) ? Canadian immigration officials have denied U.S. actor Randy Quaid's request for permanent resident status in Canada.

A Canadian government official confirmed late Saturday his request for permanent status has been denied. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Quaid can appeal the decision to the federal court.

U.S. officials last year refused to seek extradition of the actor and his wife from Canada to face felony vandalism charges in Santa Barbara, California, but authorities in the coastal town say they'll still have the couple arrested if they return to the states.?

Quaid has sought to stay in Canada, claiming he was being hunted by "Hollywood star-whackers" who had killed his friends David Carradine and Heath Ledger.?

Quaid's trouble began in 2010 when he and his wife were arrested for causing more than $5,000 damage at a hillside home they were renting.?

Randy Quaid is the older brother of actor Dennis Quaid and is best-known for his roles in films such as "National Lampoon's Vacation" and "Independence Day." He won a Golden Globe award for his depiction of President Lyndon Johnson in a TV movie in the late 1980s.

Messi scores 4 goals to pass 200 in La Liga

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Lionel Messi scored four goals to become the youngest player to pass the 200-mark in the Spanish league and set a La Liga record with goals in 11 consecutive games, leading Barcelona to a 5-1 rout of Osasuna on Sunday night.

With his 22nd hat trick for Barcelona and fifth game of four goals or more, Messi increased his La Liga total to 202 goals in 235 games. The 25-year-old became the eighth player to reach 200, joining Telmo Zarra (251), Hugo Sanchez (234), Raul Gonzalez (228), Alfredo di Stefano (227), Cesar Rodriguez (223), Quini (219) and Pahino (210). Zarra had been the youngest to reach 200, achieving the feat when he was 29.

Messi has 44 goals this season, including 33 in La Liga. He has scored in his last 16 starts overall and in a record 11 consecutive La Liga games, breaking the mark he tied last season. Mariano Martin (1942-43 to 1943-44) and Brazil's Ronaldo (1996-97) also accomplished the feat, both for Barcelona.

Barcelona hosts Real Madrid on Wednesday in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals.

"We went out there and took care of business like always," Messi said. "It was important to put the game away because it isn't easy when everyone is talking so much about the 'clasico'."

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 20th career hat trick in an 11-minute span to lead defending champion Real Madrid over Getafe 4-0.

Barcelona (19-1-1) reopened an 11-point lead over second-place Atletico Madrid (15-3-2), which lost 3-0 at Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid (13-4-4) trails Barcelona by 15 points.

LONDON (AP) ? Liverpool and Tottenham lost to lower-league opponents in the FA Cup on Sunday, joining a lengthy list of Premier League teams to exit in the fourth round of soccer's oldest knockout competition.

Oldham, in 19th place in the third tier, stunned visiting Liverpool 3-2. Despite a goal from American Clint Dempsey, Spurs lost 2-1 at Leeds, which is 11th in the second-tier League Championship.

Chelsea was spared a similar fate when Fernando Torres scored in the 83rd minute for a 2-2 tie at third-tier Brentford, forcing a replay.

The FA Cup is famous for upsets. On Saturday, Luton defeated Norwich 1-0 to become the first non-league club in 24 years to beat a top-tier opponent.

Fourth-tier Bradford set the tone this season by reaching the League Cup final after knocking out both Arsenal and Aston Villa.

"You have to take it on the chin, but there has been plenty of warnings throughout the weekend," Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said. "If your application is not right, you can get found out."

Both Liverpool and Tottenham fielded weakened lineups but they still contained plenty of millionaire players.

"I am left speechless by the result," said Oldham forward Matt Smith, who scored twice for a team that is 55 places lower than Liverpool in England's soccer pyramid. "We went out there wanting to battle together."

Oldham made its name in the early 1990s when the club reached two FA Cup semifinals (1990 and '94) and a League Cup final ('90), where it lost to Nottingham Forest.

Smith's third-minute goal was offset by Luis Suarez's in the 17th, but Oldham went ahead 3-1 when Smith scored in the fourth minute of first-half injury time and Reece Wabara got a goal in the 48th. Joe Allen's 80th-minute goal for Liverpool made the final minutes tense.

Tottenham, which is fourth in the Premier League, fell behind 2-0 when Luke Varney scored in the 15th and Ross McCormack in the 50th, Dempsey, playing at forward, headed in Gareth Bale's cross in the 58th for his eighth goal of the season.

The fifth round next month features Millwall at Luton, Reading at Manchester United, Leeds at Manchester City, Blackburn at Arsenal, Everton at Oldham, Barnsley at MK Dons, Chelsea or Brentford at Middlesbrough and Wigan at Huddersfield or Leicester.

Marek Hamsik scored in the 20th minute but Parma tied it in the 74th on an own goal by Napoli captain Paolo Cannavaro, playing his first game since a suspension for match-fixing was overturned. Cannavaro and defender Gianluca Grava were given six-month bans by the Italian soccer federation's disciplinary committee on Dec. 18, but the penalties were lifted Jan. 17 following an appeal to the federation's internal court.

Defender champion Juventus (15-3-4) has 49 points while Napoli (14-4-4), seeking its first title since Diego Maradona led it to the 1990 championship, has 46. Parma lost at home for the first time this season.

AC Milan (11-7-4) moved into fifth place with a 1-0 win at Atalanta on a 29th-minute goal by Stephen El Shaarawy, his 15th league goal this season.

Fourth-place Inter Milan (12-6-4), which is nine points back, was held to a 2-2 tie by visiting Torino.Christian Chivu gave Inter the lead in fifth with a free kick but left in the 28th with an apparent injury. Goals by Riccardo Meggiorini in the 23rd and 52nd minutes put Torino ahead. but Esteban Cambiasso tied the score for Inter when he redirecting a cross from 39-year-old captain Javier Zanetti in the 67th.

BERLIN (AP) ? Mario Mandzukic scored a goal and set up another as Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 2-0 to open an 11-point lead in the Bundesliga.

Mandzukic scored in the 50th minute, when he intercepted a backpass from defender Christian Molinaro and rounded goalkeeper Sven Ulreich, then cossed for Thomas Mueller's goal on a counterattack in the 72nd.

Bayern (15-1-3) has 48 points. Leverkusen (11-4-4) has 37 after Saturday's 0-0 tie at Freiburg.

Hamburg defeated Werder Bremen 3-2 in the Bundesliga's 98th northern derby to end a three-game losing streak in games against its rival.

PARIS (AP) ? Paris Saint-Germain regained the French league lead, getting an own goal by Aurelien Chedjou in the 68th minute for a 1-0 win against visiting Lille.

Goalkeeper Steeve Elana palmed away a cross, and the ball bounced off Chedjou's chest into the goal.

PSG (13-3-6) leads on goal difference over Lyon (13-3-6), both three points ahead of Marseille (13-6-3).

Bill Macumber Case Legal Technicalities - Business Insider

Barry Siegel's book "Manifest Injustice" chronicles the saga of Bill Macumber, who was falsely was imprisoned for 37 years for the murder of two people in Scottsdale, Ariz.

What's most galling about this tragedy is that it could have been avoided if not for a legal technicality.

A man named Ernest Valenzuela had confessed the crime to his attorney?before later dying in a prison fight. The attorney's testimony could have vindicated Macumber. Instead, a judge protected the attorney-client privilege of the dead man and let the innocent man go to jail.

When Macumber came to trial in 1975, Valenzuela's former public defender Thomas O'Toole wrote to the trial judge asking to testify about his now-dead client's confession.

However, Judge Charles Hardy wouldn't allow the confession to be heard.

"Let the record show the Court has ruled that the proffered evidence isn't admissible," Hardy said in his ruling, according to the book. "First because the communications to Mr. O'Toole and Mr. Petica [another of Valenzuela's defense attorneys] were privileged because of the attorney-client relationship. There's no waiver of the privilege."

After Macumber was sentenced to life behind bars, his defense team appealed the case all the way to the Arizona Supreme Court.

The state Supreme Court ultimately gave him a retrial because of issues with ballistics evidence.

But in its ruling granting him a retrial, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled the trial court could still "assert" the attorney-client privilege on behalf of the dead man and exclude his testimony if it wanted to.

But yet again, the court ruled against Macumber, with Judge Robert Corcoran saying attorney-client privilege prevented the testimony. Macumber was convicted a second time.

After reading the book, we were shocked that a dead man's rights would supersede those of a living man who was fighting for his life. But according to legal ethics expert Andrew Perlman, who teaches procedure and professional responsibility at Suffolk University Law School, the court made the right decision with respect to the law.

"It is not shocking to me that a court would uphold the privilege here, even though doing so might have produced an unjust outcome in this particular case," Perlman said in an email to Business Insider. "The problem is that if courts reject the privilege any time it might be perceived as necessary to uncover the truth, clients would become quite concerned about sharing any information with their lawyers. Although I believe that there should be an exception to the duty of confidentiality to permit lawyers to disclose information necessary to prevent the wrongful execution or incarceration of an innocent person, I am not convinced that such a disclosure should have the effect of waiving the attorney-client privilege."

Macumber was?released from prison in November 2012 after the Arizona Justice Project got involved and filed motions that successfully questioned the judges' decisions to not allow Valenzuela's testimony, The Republic reported at the time.

Family displaced as fire damages North Wales home - North Penn ...

Three residents were displaced and a home was heavily damaged after a blaze broke out around 2 p.m. Friday on the 300 block of Washington Avenue in North Wales.

?The neighbors heard something popping, and ran out and saw the side of the house on fire. We don?t know, we?re still investigating if that popping was the cause or one of the effects of the fire,? said Chris Park, Chief of the North Penn Fire Company.

That company and several others battled the fire for roughly an hour before bringing it under control, but not before much of the home?s second floor and first-floor roof were charred by the fire.

The cause is still under investigation, but PECO crews were on scene and cut utility lines to the house as firefighters took turns entering the house and dousing flames visible on the wooden eaves of the house.

Park said all three residents were unhurt and staying with friends and family, but declined to identify the victims further. No information was available Friday afternoon about any pets that may have lived in the house.

Montgomery County property records identify the property owners as Lambert and Claire Liebel, and family members at the scene said Claire, her son and daughter-in-law were inside and escaped the fire.

?There?s heavy exterior damage from fire, smoke and the water. We?re going to be out here for at least several more hours, just making sure everything?s completely out,? Park said.

Volunteer Medical Service Corps of Lansdale deployed an inflatable heated tent at the scene for emergency responders to stay warm, and Park said as of 4 p.m. Friday, firefighters were using it to warm up but none had been hurt while fighting the fire.

Jayne Blackledge, Director of the nearby North Wales Area Library, said that facility had its doors open for victims and emergency responders to come inside and warm up, and several had done so as snow fell on the fire scene.

?We have a microwave, we have restrooms, it?s a good place to come in and warm up. That?s what libraries are for,? she said.

The DeanBeat: Game acquisitions rise 23 percent to $3.4B in 2012 ...

During 2012, gaming continued its worldwide expansion toward billions of gamers as new platforms such as tablets and smartphones took off. But that growth was tempered against financial hardships such as the decline of Zynga?s social gaming revenues. That led to a collapse in Zynga?s stock price that deflated the social gaming bubble and hurt valuations.

Those countervailing forces affected the year in game acquisitions and investments. Acquisitions saw a boom year, rising 23 percent to more than $3.477 billion spent on game companies, compared to $2.827 billion a year earlier. But the number of deals declined and?investments fell off.

Of course, if we knew the value of every deal, the numbers would be much higher this year. But we have the same problem every year as the majority of the deals keep the values secret. 2012 saw 58 game-related deals, compared to?77?in 2011, according to original research by GamesBeat?with contributions from Sana Choudary of YetiZen, Tim Merel of Digi-Capital, Internet Deal Book, and Electronic Arts. The average deal size (where values were disclosed) was $60 million, compared with $36 million from a year earlier.

Acquisitions and disruption go together. Deal valuations are building because traditional game companies and major entertainment brands are adapting to the major shift away from the consoles toward social, mobile, and online gaming. And the barriers between social casino games and real-money online gambling companies are falling. With the prospect of legalization in the U.S. driving up values, casino games were hot in 2012. More disruptions are happening as game companies adopt new business?such as free-to-play games, where users play for free and pay small amounts for virtual goods.?Gaming also has its own version of the war for talent as big companies acquire smaller ones.

Zynga slowed down its acquisitions from its torrid pace of one per month, but it still bought nine companies during the year. Japan?s Gree stepped up its acquisitions of mobile game studios as it tried to expand ahead of rival DeNA into the U.S. market. Many game companies raised money through crowdfunding, obviating the need to sell out to larger rivals. Electronic Arts paused to digest its $1.3 billion purchase of PopCap Games from 2011.

As far as initial public offerings go, the only stand-outs were?China?s YY, which raised $81.9 million in November, and London?s Zattika, which went public and acquired three companies. Microsoft was curiously absent from the acquisitive companies. That?s very odd for a company that is preparing to launch a new video game console sometime soon.

Here?s a look at the deals of the year. We?ve organized them by dollar value of the transactions. For those deals where the value was not disclosed, we have listed them in reverse chronological order. We have linked to our own VentureBeat/GamesBeat stories where we covered them. For deals, we didn?t cover, we have linked to other publications or press releases.

1. Nexon bought 14.7 percent of massively multiplayer online game publisher NCsoft for $688 million. This was a private transaction where Nexon purchased shares owned by Taek Jin Kim, chairman and founder of NCsoft, publisher of titles such as Guild Wars 2, Aion, Lineage II and Wildstar. By comparison, last year?s top deal happened when?Electronic Arts bought?PopCap Games for up to $1.3 billion, including $550 million that depended on performance targets.

2. China?s ZheBao Media bought GameABC.com from online game publisher Shanda Games for 3.18 billion renminbi, or $503.8 million.

3. International Gaming Technology paid $500 million?for Double Down Interactive. This deal in early 2012 signaled the beginning of the bubble around social casino games, just after the Justice Department ruled that online gambling could be legalized in the U.S. if states pass laws allowing it. That opened the door for synergy between gambling companies like slot machine maker IGT and social gaming companies like Double Down, which had just 70 employees. IGT?s?latest quarterly report shows that its social casino game revenues are still growing.

4. Nexon bought Gloops for $486 million. This deal may go down as the most money ever paid for a mobile gaming studio (at least so far). Nexon cut its teeth on free-to-play online games such as MapleStory, but it went public in 2011 and has cash to burn. It spent some of that on NCsoft, and it also bought Gloops, a developer based in Japan. Gloops is known for its JapanPro Baseball Card Battle and Warriors of Odin games.

5. Sony acquired Gaikai for $380 million. While Gaikai had almost no revenue, this deal signaled the arrival of cloud gaming as a contender. It was accompanied soon after by the collapse of cloud gaming leader OnLive, whose assets were sold for a pittance. Sony hasn?t said what it will do with Gaikai. But by offering cloud games on its next console, it could certainly disrupt its own $60 disc-based console game business. Better for Sony to do that than somebody else.

6. Gree paid $210 million for Funzio. Gree?s move came in the spring, when the bubble around games was still inflating and the company was aggressively trying to break into the U.S. mobile games market. Funzio seemed to have cracked the code with hit games such as Modern Combat and Kingdom Age. The Japanese company was generating more than a billion in revenue from its mobile social gaming network, and it was betting that U.S. mobile gamers would behave the same way. Microsoft virtual ecosystem aims to simulate world

5 hrs.

Microsoft Research is embarking on a highly ambitious project: A computational model of an entire ecosystem, from the soil itself to the creatures that live on it.

Such a comprehensive model would be useful not just to biologists, but to city planners and legislators, who could see concrete?predictions regarding things like deforestation and dams.

To model anything from nature properly is a monumental task, regardless of scale. A single atom, a single cell, or a single organism contains so much information and so many variables that it is effectively impossible to model them perfectly.

Modeling?an entire ecosystem with any accuracy, then, is a task of mind-boggling complexity. But not too long ago, so was sequencing the human genome, or simulating the way proteins form and fold in the molecular soup of our bodies. Drew Purves at Microsoft Research in Cambridge thinks the time has come for what the company describes as a General Ecosystem Model?(also known as GEM)?? capable of simulating just about any ecosystem in the world.

Purves wrote an article for the journal Nature announcing the?team's intentions, and calling for others to help out ? because it's not a small project. They've already created a prototype, called the Madingley Model, which is already more ambitious than anything out there.

"There are a huge number of ecological and environmental models, but in our opinion, nothing that is yet as comprehensive as a GEM would be," Purves told NBC News in an emailed statement. Models for certain areas of the ocean, or specific types of forests, already exist, but can't be adapted easily. He wants to make one that's powerful enough to be applied anywhere, from the deep ocean to the high desert; you'd just need to put in the correct parameters.

It wouldn't be perfect, but you?don't need a perfect model of something to make useful predictions: Tomorrow's weather, the effects of a drug, and the existence of subatomic particles like the Higgs Boson were all theorized from imperfect models. And Purves cautions that while the researchers' work has a broader range than anything out there, it's still missing a lot.

Even without simulating bacteria or the effects of certain features like streams, researchers can reach predictions that match up to the real world. A rise in temperature, for example, would kill off certain plants and cause others to thrive, which would affect the soil they live in, the herbivores that feed on them, and the carnivores that feed on them. It could all be simulated within the model.

But they still need data. Lots more data. Purves elaborates:?"What we are really missing is good data on the state of whole ecosystems... how much herbivore biomass there is in total, or, how many individuals of each size class?" After all, a thousand, big wildebeest may consume more grass than small ones, and seek out higher territories. And since every creature ends up recycled into the ecosystem again, every statistic is important to keep track of.

Purves hopes that the model will enable not just advances in science, but in policy as well. With a true model of a state or region's ecosystem, the effects of dams, runoff, climate change, and other things can be calculated objectively and included as part of the lawmaking discussion. On that front, the researchers are collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme to help?hone?their work for political relevance.

It's a work in progress, but in a few years it could be a powerful resource for anyone looking into the effects of just about anything on the environment and its denizens. New updates to the project will be logged at the Computational Ecology and Environmental Science section of Microsoft Research.

THE RESET: John Kerry breezes through Hill hearing

John Kerry to be secretary of state and Jack Lew for Treasury secretary. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, File)

The Senate confirmation process is a minefield for many presidential nominees. But Sen. John Kerry seemed to navigate those waters safely at his confirmation hearing to be secretary of state.

The Massachusetts Democrat was treated gently on Thursday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee ? even by the same Republicans who relentlessly grilled outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton a day earlier on the administration's handling of the deadly September terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

It doesn't hurt that Kerry ? widely scorned by Republicans in 2004 when he was the Democratic presidential nominee? is the panel's present chairman and popular with colleagues of both parties.

"You're ready to go," said Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee, the panel's top-ranking Republican. "My sense is your confirmation will go through very, very quickly."

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called his fellow Vietnam War veteran "my friend" and told members Kerry's qualifications for the job "are well known to you and all of our colleagues."

It won't be nearly as smooth for President Barack Obama's nominations of former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel for defense secretary or John Brennan to head the CIA.

Both are sure to face tough questioning from senators? Hagel about past statements on Iran, gays and Israel; Brennan, now the top White House counterterrorism adviser, on the Benghazi attack.

Kerry and the committee members were clearly comfortable with each other.

Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the incoming chairman, wondered how Kerry would be able to "explain to world leaders how you could have been rooting for the Boston Red Sox instead of what the world knows is the New York Yankees as the team of the world."

Kerry laughed it off.

And the clear affection didn't only flow from the committee to Kerry.

Here's how he kicked off his testimony: "Let me say I've never seen a more distinguished and better looking group of public officials in my life."

'Getting worse': Egypt's gays fear crackdown

Ahmed Youssef / EPA

Eighteen days of popular protest culminated in the downfall of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, 2011.

By Duncan Golestani, Correspondent, NBC News

CAIRO, Egypt -- Maha remembers going to Tahrir Square on Jan. 25, 2011. The 27-year-old office worker only wanted to look around the Cairo intersection filled with thousands of protesters. But seeing Egypt's revolution unfold before her, she left to get friends and quickly returned. Without planning to, Maha became one of the highly visible gay men and women who took to the streets shouting for change.

"We don't get freedom anywhere. No voice, nothing," said Maha, who declined to give her surname "So, the first chance at revolution, we fought."

Nearly two years after the ouster of former leader Hosni Mubarak, Maha sits smoking a shisha with her friend Noor at a back-street cafe in downtown Cairo. Together, the women have made this location a "safe place" for gays, somewhere they can come and be themselves.

Unlike in other major cities around the world, there is no flag or signage to indicate this is a "gay" cafe. People know about it through word-of-mouth and the online forum, "Bedayaa." They talk about the time since the revolution with a weariness that contrasts with the excitement they initially felt.

Many of Egypt's gays and lesbians thought sexual freedom was on the horizon. "There was a moment of hope but the last few years has killed it," Maha says, adding: "Nothing much has changed, it is very hard." She is interrupted by Noor: "I think it is getting worse," she says.

The women remember sitting with gay male friends at another cafe three months after the revolution, when locals complained about it and called nearby military police, who then found make-up in the bag of one of the boys. They were all taken away for questioning for "making a mess" in the area.

Egypt has no specific laws banning homosexuality although there are plenty of ways to charge someone suspected of engaging in homosexual acts. Police will often charge gay people with "debauchery" or breaking the country's law of public morals. The election of an Islamist president in Egypt, and the passing last month of a new constitution, has also increased fears among the country's gay men and women that anti-gay legislation could soon be introduced. "We think in two or three months they will put a law to discriminate," Maha says.

Many others fear a government crackdown is only a matter of time. The most notorious pre-revolution attack on gay men took place in 2001, when Cairo police raided a Nile boat, arresting dozens of gay men. Along with others taken from the streets, they became known as the "Cairo 52." But now, the Muslim Brotherhood is not just a power to be appeased - it is the dominant power in Egypt's new government.

The natural instinct for most gay Egyptians is to try not to draw attention to themselves but taking part in the revolution has brought greater visibility -- at a cost. Alongside other minorities the gay community has been criticized for its role in the uprising.

Adel Ramadan, a legal officer at the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, describes the derogatory language used to attack the groups that took to the streets. "After? the fall of Mubarak, the criticism of those groups has always contained a sexual element. Whether it's the women who are participating are called prostitutes or 'loose' women, or men are called homosexuals."

AP

The former Egyptian president faces charges of corruption and complicity in deaths of protesters.

Maha believes this kind of rhetoric has led to an increase in verbal abuse. She thinks some people feel emboldened to shout and call names, knowing the authorities will be on their side. A popular term with some members of the Muslim Brotherhood is "shewaz," a derogatory term for homosexuals that loosely translates as "perverts."

While gay advocacy organizations are active in other predominantly Muslim countries such as Lebanon, Egypt's support groups are not well organized and struggle to be heard. The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights is a human rights group that will talk about gays but this cause is not a priority for them. Another group that works with them asked that it not be named for fear of reprisals.

Despite their fears, gay life continues in Cairo. Men still meet on one of the city's bridges, and the Internet and social media help bring people together. Kholoud Bidak is an activist who is thinking of setting up an online forum. She was also in Tahrir Square in January 2011 and was stunned at the number of gay men and women at the heart of the protests. She has been disappointed in the two years that followed, but believes the gay community has at least gained recognition from human rights groups, which were previously uninterested. "They are finally starting to acknowledge LGBTs, 'oh, they were in the revolution since day one very, very effectively.' I thought that is very positive."

She remains scared by the anti-gay rhetoric from some politicians and clerics but tries to stay upbeat. "There is some hope," she says. "How? I don't know."

Search Challenge: What, Why, and Where are These Stone Circles?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

I was walking the other day and came across part of a fragment of a stone circle embedded in the street.

That was odd, but I didn't think much of it until a little while later I happened to come across a full circle, also laid perfectly in the street, made entirely of bricks.

Search Challenge: What, Why, and Where are These Stone Circles?

Once is odd, but twice makes me pay attention.

When it happened a THIRD time, I started wondering why the city would be making such interesting marks on the pavement. Is this the rise of a new Stonehenge culture? Could it be the mason's version of crop circles? Maybe they're secret ICBM missile silos!

Search Challenge: What, Why, and Where are These Stone Circles?

Today's challenge: What are these circles? Why and when were they made? How many more can I expect to find? Finally, in what city do these circles appear?

As always, please let us know what the answer is, and most importantly, HOW YOU SOLVED the challenge! If you'd include a time estimate on how long it took, that would be great too.

Carney expected to lower sights on economy | Metro - Metro News

OTTAWA ? Mark Carney has got some explaining to do.

It is no mystery that the Bank of Canada governor will keep the key interest rate moored at one per cent on Wednesday, but some fancy footwork is required to account for how the central bank?s policy team could have been so off about the economy in the past year.

Given the enormous uncertainty in the world, economic forecasters should be prepared to eat some humble pie, says Derek Holt, vice-president of economics with Scotia Capital.

But the Bank of Canada?s forecasts require a double helping.

?I?m of the view that the bank has fairly persistently been too optimistic on growth over its forecast horizon, and not just recently,? he said.

The puts the bank in the position of ?having to play the downward revision game for the next year or two.?

In July, the bank missed the sharp slowdown in the third quarter as it was occurring, predicting a solid two per cent expansion despite the undershoot in the first half of the year. The October analysis wasn?t much better, sticking with the growth story ? this time 2.5 per cent for the fourth quarter of 2012 ? when now it looks 1.5 would have been a stretch.

The bank?s governing council has also underestimated the downward slide of inflation.

On Wednesday, when it releases its winter monetary policy report, the bank will almost certainly ?play the downward revision? game, to use Holt?s characterization, not only looking backwards, but likely on its 2.3-per-cent expectation for 2013.

Earlier this month, senior deputy governor Tiff Macklem acknowledged publicly that the economy hasn?t been as strong as the bank anticipated.

Still, on the policy front, many expected Carney to stick to his guns, both in resisting further cuts to interest rates to stimulate the economy, and even in maintaining guidance to markets that the next move, whenever it comes, will bring higher rates.

TD Bank chief economist Craig Alexander says there is justification for dropping that tightening bias, but with Canadians over their heads in debt, Carney is unlikely to signal any weakening of resolve.

?Financial markets have been debating whether the bank could drop the forward looking language? but I still think they?ll leave it in place and the main reason is the bank is still concerned about imbalances in the Canadian economy from consumer debt,? he explained.

Despite the slowdown that has already occurred, Carney could still stay upbeat about the future in anticipation that both the U.S. and China, the world?s two largest economies, appear to be gathering steam, said Doug Porter of BMO Capital Markets.

?I think they?ll recognize the softness we?ve seen, but I think they?ll be more upbeat about what lies ahead.?

Still, Porter notes that the bank will need to make a major revision to come near his own projection of weak 1.7 per cent growth through 2013.

Also of interest Wednesday is that the bank is putting into practice a new format for the interest rate decision and monetary report. In the past, the releases were issued separately over two days, but they are now being telescoped into one announcement. This will push back the announcement on interest rates one hour to 10 a.m. ET.

Observers also expect Carney to face a different mood when he meets journalists later in the morning.

Wednesday is the first opportunity media will have had to question the governor on recent revelations he had been courted by Liberals to take a run at the leadership contest, and had vacationed at Liberal finance critic Scott Brison?s cottage during the summer.

The latter raised questions about whether Carney had breached conflict of interest guidelines in accepting a gift, but the bank ruled the stay was of a personal nature and not part of his duties as governor.

Why PC Gaming Is Superior To Console Gaming

With the anticipated arrival of more next-generation consoles in either 2013 or 2014, much hype has been heaped onto these consoles and questions of who will bring the more powerful console or the better performance for price has been thrown around on many websites. All the while though, the PC community knows that next-generation consoles still won?t touch current medium-high PC setups. For the past seven years, the PC has slowly but surely pulled itself away from consoles in terms of power that even a new generation of consoles will unlikely challenge the platform.

One of the reasons for this is the popularity of the Wii. The Wii is the best selling console of the current/last generation, and it did so with the least amount of power compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3. In doing so, it brought in many casual gamers that Sony and Microsoft now want a piece of the casual pie too. They will likely sacrifice power for casual gimmicks, think of more Kinect and PSMove games. These kind of games don?t need a powerful system, and to entice casual gamers, consoles can?t be sold at a high price either. Both of these aspects will mean that next-generation consoles won?t pack as much power as a medium-high PC setup. This is already evident with the Wii U.

Another reason why PC gaming is superior is the amount of variety in games available for the system. Sure, the PC will miss out on console exclusive titles, but everyone knows those games are a kind of pity call as they?re exclusive simply to help sell consoles, rather than because it could not work on PCs. Even better, the PC is becoming a great place for indie game developers to showcase their talents and creations. The PC community is more than willing to try these indie games, and word travels fast when a good game comes around. Variety isn?t just there in games either, variety comes from control input too. A gamer can easily choose between the typical gamepad or the traditional mouse and keyboard. Variety also comes in how you prefer to communicate in-game, whether through specific game services like in Steam, or just through Skype. The PC is the epitome of variety.

PC games are also much cheaper than console games. The high entry point for a high-end PC becomes nullified the more games you are likely to play. This is especially true given that console gamers will most likely have a computer or laptop to accompany their console anyway. Thus, it?s likely that by 10-15 games, you?ll have broken even with console gamers. And that?s not counting online paid services like Xbox Live or PS+. All that comes free on a PC platform. The various sales that are available from PC services like Steam or GreenManGaming also help to lessen the wallet burden.

PC gaming is becoming a lot more accessible than console gaming too. Console gaming still relies heavily on retail sales. With digital outlets like Steam, GreenManGaming and even Amazon online catering to direct download of gaming content, PC gaming hasn?t been easier. There?s generally no real wait time either, although your ability to quickly download games does depend on your connection. Console games still rely heavily on retail purchases though. Digital distribution for console games is leagues behind the PC version and generally costs more than retail prices anyway. That said, even if you do prefer a physical copy of your games, you can still obtain physical copies of PC games too. It?s that word again that?s synonymous with PC gaming: Variety.

These are just some simple examples of how PC gaming is superior to console gaming. Of course, some peoples preferences may make them prefer console gaming, but that doesn?t really change the superior abilities of the PC platform. That said, the ?Steambox? being planned by Valve could lead the way for console gamers to become more accustomed to PC gaming and allow them a more acceptable entry point into PC gaming. It?s definitely an interesting venture.

(AP) ? Stung by the overwhelmingly negative reaction to removing the name of original "Saturday Night Live" cast member Gilda Radner from a cancer support group's title, a Wisconsin chapter is borrowing one of the comedian's catch phrases for its next announcement: Never mind.

Gilda's Club Madison will remain just that, group leaders told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The board voted last week to keep the name after an avalanche of criticism in November when it announced it was switching to the more generic Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin, in part out of concern that young people today were unfamiliar with Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.

"It really struck a chord with folks and all of us agreed we want people to come to Gilda's and get the help that they need," said Wayne Harris, chairman of the board for the Madison chapter. "If this is what it takes to make that happen, we're all as a group happy to make it happen."

The intention of changing to a broader name was honorable, Harris said. "In retrospect, we probably should have thought that through or understood it more," he said.

Anger over the name change, which was supposed to take effect this month, came from members of the local Gilda's Club chapter, fans of Radner who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor, leaders of other clubs who reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the name, as well as Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder.

"We started receiving emails right away," said Lannia Stenz, director of the Madison chapter. "For the most part it was simply asking 'Why did you do this? Please reconsider.' It was really, truly passionate feedback. We had some people who were angry but at the base of everything it was the love of Gilda and her story."

Reaction to the news led to a flurry of positive comments Wednesday on the Gilda's Club Facebook page and on Twitter.

Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how generations view the world differently, said he was glad to know that Radner still resonates with people and has not been forgotten.

But Nief also said he thought the decision to keep the name was more about securing future donations and less about honoring Radner.

"They are an organization that does very good work and in order to do it they have to raise money and the name is related to their ability to raise funds," Nief said.

Stenz, leader of the Madison chapter, said the potential loss of donations "was not as much of a factor in our decision to retain the name." She said it was driven more by feedback from its board, Gilda's Club members and people in the community.

Stenz and Harris said the goal of the name change was always about making clear the group's mission, not to remove Radner's memory.

"We were just talking about changing the name that we went by legally," Harris said. While Radner would have still been a part of the organization, "in the end, they want to see Gilda's name out front," he said.

Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls of the Madison-area chapter, which is located in the suburb of Middleton. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her "Saturday Night Live" characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana; speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters; and out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella who would say, "Never mind," after being told of her confusion.

Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986. She sought support from The Wellness Community in California, and in 1991, her friends and family started Gilda's Club on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or changing it. Of the 53 chapters worldwide, 23 are known as Gilda's Club.

Together, the chapters deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, said Linda House, executive vice president of the national Cancer Support Community. The Madison chapter has about 2,200 members.

Stenz said she hoped the Madison community that Gilda's Club serves will embrace its decision to keep the name.

As far as lessons learned from the experience, Harris had a simple takeaway: "We're not changing our name again."
