HD Guru recently published an article entitled "Is your TV watching you?" In it, we discussed the fact that new features in Samsung's top 2012 models -- including built-in microphones, HDTV camera, wireless and wired Internet connection, built-in browser with voice to text conversion, face recognition and more -- could be used to collect unprecedented personal information, as well as present a new way for hackers to invade users' lives.

We asked Samsung for a privacy statement prior to publication, but the company did not respond. Now, Samsung has given HD Guru an official comment, and shared two separate privacy policies. In the interest of transparency, here's the complete statement, with our emphasis added on key parts:

Samsung takes all concerns regarding consumer privacy and information security very seriously. In all of our Smart TVs, including our new 2012 LED and Plasma TVs featuring built-in camera and microphone components, Samsung employs industry-standard security safeguards and practices (including data encryption) to secure consumers? personal information and prevent its unauthorized collection or use.

Samsung also ensures consumers have the opportunity to review the terms of the company?s Privacy Policy prior to using Samsung?s Smart TV services. The Privacy Policy can be found at?www.samsung.com/privacy. ?

The camera and microphone are integrated into the TV to provide users with innovative new ways to control the TV. They may also be used for video conference and speech-to-text services offered by third parties, in which case the audio and video data is transmitted to the service providers? servers and does not pass through Samsung servers. Images captured in order to use the facial recognition feature are stored in a secure manner on the owner?s TV only.?

Should the TV owner choose not to use these features, the camera and microphone can be disabled. Users can check if the camera and microphone are activated from the TV?s settings menu. As an added precaution, the camera can be rotated and tucked into the bezel of the TV. Once tucked away, the camera only captures a black image.

Samsung is dedicated to instilling consumer confidence in this matter. Any questions regarding the Privacy Policy or protection of personal information on the TV can be directed to intertv@samsung.com.

Samsung says it does not upload video or voice streams into its servers, though it does sample your voice for speech command. We know third parties such as Skype use encryption for video conferencing, and Samsung says it uses the same "industry standard security" for the "personal information" it transmits.?

We asked Mineola, N.Y. attorney Emouna Matin, who handles privacy cases, to explain what is meant by "personal information," and if would include video and voice samples, along with browser history and TV viewing habits.

"Samsung has to address that more properly," says Matin. Personal information can be limited pedigree information -- name, address, phone number, age, the kind of descriptive information that identifies you as an individual but doesn't say a lot about who you are -- or ?"stronger" information -- your voice, your personal images, websites visited, data that are not traditionally defined as "personal" but say a lot more about you.

Another issue is that Samsung effectively locks you into a privacy agreement before you can even use the Internet-based services of the TV. In part, this agreement reads:

We reserve the right to share all Personal Data and non-Personal Data with any company within the Samsung Electronics group of companies, or with any other company that operates under the Samsung brand. ... Each of the Samsung Group Companies will use your information in accordance with their own independent privacy practices.

The lengthy agreement goes on to say that your data will be carefully guarded and shared only when necessary "in order to pursue our legitimate interests or if we are required to or are permitted to do so by law." While this reads as relatively standard, the definition of "personal information" is, again, not made clear.

As for the "Group Companies" that can receive personal data from a Smart TV, Samsung says it is not every one of the 48 Samsung subsidiaries and joint ventures. For U.S. customers, only Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in Korea, Samsung Electronics America and?Samsung SDS (based in both U.S. and Germany) would share the information. For customers in other countries, their local Samsung subsidiary would also share with the Samsung Electronics Co. and SDS, which handles data globally.

It is good to see Samsung disclosing more details of its privacy policy, but the industry still has a way to go before consumers can have a complete understanding of what is at risk when using these new and unprecedented technologies. HD Guru will continue to investigate the Samsung TVs and others, in hopes of learning exactly what these new HDTV eyes and ears are sending out from your home.

Prosecutor in Trayvon Martin case known as tough

Angela Corey, special prosecutor in the Trayvon Martin case?is known for her tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for long sentences?and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains.

The special prosecutor leading the investigation into the shooting death of an unarmed black teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer is known for her tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for long sentences and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains.

Furthermore, Angela Corey has handled hundreds of homicide cases involving the justifiable use of deadly force ? experience that could prove invaluable. It will be up to Corey whether to charge 28-year-old George Zimmerman, who says he was defending himself when he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a scuffle.

Martin was unarmed as he walked from a convenience store, and the case has become a racial flashpoint with protesters across the nation calling for his arrest. Zimmerman's father is white, his mother Hispanic.

Police did not initially charge Zimmerman because of a state law allowing someone to use deadly force if his life is in danger.

Trayvon Martin case: Three key questions still not answered

Corey, who also could call a grand jury to decide whether to file charges against Zimmerman, is known in legal circles as being passionate about victim's rights and having clubby ties to law enforcement. She won the State Attorney's Office seat after being fired from her job at the office a few years ago, beating the handpicked successor of the state attorney who fired her.

Corey was appointed the special prosecutor in the case by Gov. Rick Scott after State Attorney Norm Wolfinger, whose district covers Sanford, recused himself.

Since she took on the case a dozen days ago, Corey and her team of two prosecutors and an investigator have interviewed witnesses in Sanford and visited the scene of the shooting. She also has instituted a media blackout, refusing to comment on any aspect of the case as of this week. Corey refused to take any questions about the Trayvon Martin case during a telephone interview on Friday.

Defense attorneys who have gone up against Corey in court say she is up for the job.

"She is a tough-minded prosecutor who is prepared, thorough and a very good advocate for the prosecution in the court," said Ann Finnell, a Jacksonville defense attorney who has faced off against Corey during a trial. Finnell also was on the legal team for Casey Anthony, the Orlando mother acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

Mortgage Refinancing ? Negotiate Extensively With Your Mortgage ...

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Fred

When it comes to buying any expensive product either a car or even a home itself, a lot of negotiations go on before the final deal is cut. In a similar fashion any loan product is an expensive proposition and an extensive negotiation is required between you and a mortgage broker pertaining to fees, interest rates, terms and fresh home loan or mortgage refinancing plans. Mortgage brokers get hefty fees relying on the amount of loans or business that they provide to any bank or lender which they are ready to get from them either on percentage basis or certain fee. Besides at times mortgage brokers even make hefty commissions from the closing costs that allow them to book heavy profits.

When you are considering getting home mortgage refinancing loan plan, you should negotiate your business with no less than three mortgage brokers so that they compete with each other to get you the best deal from the best lender. When you are on the lookout for a mortgage, it's not realistic to hang around until the market gets better; all you can do is immediately avail the lowest rate that is available at that moment. If you take too long trying to come to a decision on to get the lowest interest rate possible, you might possibly lose the chance of saving heavily on the home cost itself.

If you have built an excellent rapport and are confident with a particular broker, it's worth following his recommendation. Definitely, he would like to see you get the most favorable deal possible since he would as well stand to gain through commissions the moment you confirm your verdict to go for a home mortgage refinancing loan plan proposed by him and as well through the references you will make about him to other potential clients. Hence, it will be a win-win situation for both of you where you stand to gain by saving your money by getting the best deal and he benefitting by getting more business in due course.

A different means of getting an effective home mortgage refinancing loan plan is opting for cash out, which means refinancing your existing mortgage for a completely different interest rate, form and tenure. This process allows you to get a higher mortgage amount than what you at present have, providing you with additional cash to repay other unpaid debts having higher interest like credit card dues, thereby allowing you to save some money or for home improvements.

Many home mortgage refinancing lenders need proof of expenditures like checks and documents confirming that you need this loan for home improvements or any other purpose; however in the end, it's worth making the most of such low interest prevailing now. Remember refinancing your existing mortgage can be a difficult task to do it yourself, without the right expertise, and little information. So, contact an expert mortgage broker that can give you the best tips and information concerning refinancing before you consider refinancing your mortgage. For more information and tips search the internet now!

Hacking scandal fells ex-UK police media chief

(AP) ? The communications chief at London's police department has resigned following an investigation touched off by the phone hacking scandal.

Scotland Yard's Dick Fedorcio resigned Thursday after the force decided he would face disciplinary proceedings over a contract awarded to a former executive at Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission decided Fedorcio had to answer questions in the hiring of Neil Wallis. Fedorcio has been on extended leave while the allegations were being investigated.

The allegation came to light amid the phone hacking scandal, which began with revelations that journalists hacked the phones of celebrities and others to get story scoops. The controversy showed the cozy ties between British tabloids and senior police officers.

diceytillerman: Paolo Bacigalupi, queer kids, and dystopic tropes.

I absolutely adored Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi. I loved the world building. It's not often I can fall so hard in love with a book primarily for its world building, but it sure happened with Ship Breaker. I'm looking forward to reading The Drowned Cities.

Recently Bacigalupi wrote a post for Kirkus about the lack of gay and lesbian characters in dystopic fiction. He discusses the overlap between the type of oppressions often enacted upon the general population in dystopias, and the type of oppressions often enacted upon certain groups of people in the real world. Bacigalupi makes the powerful and critical point that gay and lesbian people in real life are often subject to the same horrifying persecution that we expect to see hammering down on "the people" (my term) in dystopic novels.

That's a stong and excellent point, and I'm glad to see it posted.

I do wish it weren't framed as an answer (though he admits it was originally an off-the-cuff answer) to the question of why more gays and lesbians aren't seen in dystopian novels. His great point is one that everyone should hear and think about, but I don't feel convinced that it explains the absence of queer folks from dystopic novels. Isn?t queerness absent from dystopias for the same reason it's absent from lots of media and art? -- cultural erasure, heteronormativity, the customary blend of hate and condescension and ignorance and forgetfulness?

Other groups oppressed in real life are also subject to some of the oppressions we see in dystopias -- it's not just queer folks, even when we expand Bacigalupi?s "gay and lesbian" category to everyone who's queer. For two more examples (limited just for space), racism and ableism cause dystopic-flavor oppressions in real life too. It's also important to note that there are queer YAs -- and YAs of color, and YAs with disabilities -- whose lives feel pretty good and happy. But my main point here is that Bacigalupi's assertion, while powerful and absolutely crucial, doesn't strike me as a reason not to have queer teens in YA dystopias. When they're missing, it's not a statement that real queer teens already live a dystopic life; it?s erasure.

To the extent that some queer teens -- and teens of color, and teens with disabilities -- do live lives that overlap with fictional dystopias, put those teens and their lives into a dystopic novel and explore how that factor of their lives weaves into the fabric of that particular fictional dystopia. To the extent that queer teens and teens of colors and teens with disabilities live lives that are happy and safe, let's put them in the dystopias that way too, and explore how that intersects with that particular dystopia. Just... put them in the dystopias. Because ?the people? in those novels should include queer kids too, and kids of color, and kids with disabilities. Being in an oppressed group in real life is no reason not to be portrayed in books, even if some of real life mimics some of that book's tropes and details. It could be a way, as Bacigalupi encourages, to "illuminate the horrors right before our eyes." Not by simply showing some of the real world's oppression fictionalized, but by doing things with it, the ways writers can. Because writers are magic.

The dystopias I'm talking about needn't simply mirror and recreate the oppression of real life. I'm not talking about piling it on, in fiction, to folks who already get their share of oppression in real life. (Note: nobody should have a share at all.) There are millions of literary paths to follow. Millions of stories to write. Millions of options as to how any real group that's currently oppressed in dystopic-trope ways could be a broad, complex part of the fabric of a dystopic novel. In the hands of good writers, these dystopias can, as Bacigalupi hopes, "be insurgent. They should force readers to question who they are, what their society is like, and what they take for granted. A good dystopia will illuminate the horrors right before our eyes, and one can hope that if it does its job well, it will create empathy and humanity in world that is sorely lacking."

Slacker rat, worker rat

Rodent work ethic, like people?s, comes in two types

Web edition : 10:27 am

When it comes to intellectual challenges, rats, like people, fall naturally into categories of slackers and workers. And a shot of stimulant sometimes gets slackers to work harder while prompting the workers to ease off, researchers report online March 28 in Neuropsychopharmacology.

Hard work can come in many forms. Animal studies that explore the costs and benefits of such tasks usually involve rodents physically working, such as pushing a lever or scaling a wall for a reward. But those kinds of experiments don?t account for mental effort, says Jay Hosking of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

?We were trying to find something that modeled a little more closely what you see in the human experience,? Hosking says. ?In everyday life, it?s the cognitive side where people really have to make those decisions, like whether you work harder throughout the day in hopes of getting a promotion, or coast through and check Facebook every 15 minutes and earn your wages.?

In the study?s rodent analog of a work day, rats poked their nose into one of five holes to indicate the location of a flash of light. By pushing a lever before the trial began, the rats chose either an easy version or a hard one. In the easy task, the light shone for a full second, making its location easy to spot. In the hard version, the light briefly flashed for a fifth of a second, a time so brief that the rats had to really concentrate to choose the right hole. The harder task came with double the sugar-pellet reward.?

When compared to the average behavior, some individuals reliably went for the easy version and collected their small reward. Other animals overwhelmingly chose the intellectually harder route. Not only do these divisions between what the team termed slackers and workers exist, the researchers showed, but the differences persist across many trials.

?This article opens up a new area related to mental effort,? says behavioral neuroscientist John Salamone of the University of Connecticut in Storrs. For instance, scientists can now start to explore the relationship between physical and mental work.

Giving rats the stimulants amphetamine and caffeine produced varied effects depending on individual?s personality, the team found. For slacker rats, amphetamine sharpened the mental work ethic, making the animals more likely to choose the harder task. But for workers, amphetamine caused the animals to choose the easier option more. Meanwhile, caffeine turned worker rats into slackers, but didn?t make the slackers work any harder.?

The researchers can?t yet explain why stimulants would cause workers to choose the easier task. One possibility is that hard workers are already performing optimally, so anything that swings the system out of whack, such as stimulants, could cause a net decrease in productivity.

More generally, the results show that drugs aren?t necessarily one-size-fits-all, Salamone says.

(AP) ? Germany's new president praised Poland as a land of freedom and expressed remorse over the cruelty inflicted by Germany on the country during World War II, in a first foreign visit heavy with symbolism.

Joachim Gauck's words of reconciliation and warmth for the eastern neighbor were made Tuesday in Warsaw four days after he was inaugurated into a role that carries more moral authority than real power.

Trips to Poland by German leaders always carry a degree of symbolic and emotional weight due to persisting memories of the war. In recent years, some German leaders have made their first visits abroad to Poland, though France remains a common destination too.

Though the two countries are strong allies today, many older Poles remain bitter, and negative stereotypes on both sides still exist. Gauck, who is 72, noted that he remained conscious of German "guilt."

"It's been a big joy for me to be received here with an openness and warmth that I would never take for granted," Gauck said. "I am an older German, born during the war and deeply remember the changing history and the brutality of Germans before my time toward Poland."

A former Lutheran pastor and democracy activist in East Germany, Gauck also spoke of the inspiration Poland was for him during the 1980s, when the Solidarity movement led by Lech Walesa struggled for freedom in Poland.

"For me, Poland is the European country of freedom," Gauck said during a joint news conference with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski. He said that while there were political considerations for coming to Poland first, the decision above all "came from the heart."

Komorowski, who was also an anti-communist dissident, gave Gauck an original historic poster of Solidarity.

Gauck appeared surprised and moved by the gift, and said he already has the same poster hanging in his home. He said the new one would be displayed in his office.

He thanked Komorowski, and the leaders shook hands and then hugged.

Poland and Germany today belong to the European Union and NATO and are major trading partners. The presidents said they discussed ways to deepen their ties further, for instance through youth initiatives or rock concerts ? with Gauck saying he would attend such a concert despite his age.

Health Care Reform on Trial: What's at Stake in the Upcoming Supreme Court Arguments

News | Health

Hearings on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act begin on March 26. The law has yet to take full force, and key aspects, health experts argue, remain fundamentally misunderstood by the public

The U.S. Supreme Court is a busy place this time of year. So when the justices announced that, starting March 26, they would hear six hours of arguments on the health care reform law?the most time it has dedicated to any one case in decades?the gravitas of the issue became clear to all.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is perhaps the most profound change to health care since Medicaid was instituted in 1965. "This case deserves the hype it's getting," says Gregory Magarian, a law professor at Washington University in Saint Louis School of Law.

The case is not just a political lightning rod?and whatever decisions emerge from the Court in the early summer will likely do little to diffuse the partisan tensions around the issue. What's really at stake in the case is individuals' access to health care.

Signed into law March 23, 2010, PPACA is expected to expand access to health care to an additional 32 million uninsured people in the U.S.?unless all or part of it is struck down by the Supreme Court.

"If this law's thrown out, I think we're resigned to the status quo, which is a lot of people without access to health care for a long time," says Larry Levitt, an expert at the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy analysis organization. "I don't think there's any question about what lack of access to health care means: people get treated later, and some people die earlier as a result."

That also means continued health care cost increases, an expenditure that already eats up some $2.6 trillion a year?about a fifth of all U.S. spending.

At issue are two major provisions: the requirement that everyone have health insurance?the so-called individual mandate?and an expansion of Medicaid benefits, which would help more people afford insurance in the first place. "If the Court rejects either or both of those, it would have far-reaching implications for how health care reform would work?or even if the law would work at all," Levitt says. With fewer people insured, premiums would become even more expensive.

One of the unusual things about the legal challenge is that most of the law's big changes have not yet gone into effect, which has muddied the debate about how it will likely affect people's lives in practice. The individual mandate, for example, is not slated to begin until 2014. As more provisions are rolled out, Magarian notes, the law's benefits for individuals will likely become clearer to many. "For a lot of people this law is going to be a desirable thing on a personal level." he says.

From a public health perspective, the only argument against the law is that it should be even more aggressive in ensuring that people have access to affordable health care, says John McDonough, a professor at Harvard University's School of Public Health.

The Court will be hearing arguments about four segments of the law over the course of three days. What is at stake for each of these issues?

Individual health
Much of the outcry about the PPACA has centered on a need to preserve individual rights?that is, no law should require that people get health coverage. But the case before the court, Magarian explains, "isn't about that at all." The question in front of the Court pertains to state rights. "I think that would surprise a lot of people." This confusion, he posits, might be behind some of the recent polls that show about two thirds of Americans favor repealing the whole law part and parcel. As Levitt points out, if the Court overturns the PPACA, the states are well within their constitutional bounds to require their residents to purchase health insurance (as they already do with auto insurance).

Air Canada says employees returning to work

Air Canada said its groundcrew employees in both Toronto and Montreal were returning to work Friday morning after a wildcat work stoppage that led to dozens of flight delays and cancellations.

Airline spokeswoman Isabelle Arthur told Postmedia News in an email that an arbitrator had issued an injunction, bringing an end to the job action.

Bill Trbovich, spokesman for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), said the parties agreed to end the action on the condition the striking workers would not receive any penalties or fines, and the three suspended employees and 37 Air Canada staff that were subsequently fired afterward are reinstated immediately.

At about 10 p.m. local time Thursday, about 150 ground crew workers walked off the job in Toronto. By Friday morning, the labour action had spread to Montreal.

Air Canada employees at the Quebec City airport also went back to work after having walked of the job earlier Friday to support their colleagues.

Quebec City airport authority spokesman said flights were slowly resuming.

No Air Canada flights landed on the Quebec City tarmac nor left the airport between 8 and 10:30 a.m. local time Friday.

The job action came after the federal government moved earlier this month to prevent a work stoppage at the country's biggest airline, passing legislation to block legal strikes or lockouts.

But on Friday, the travel disruptions apparently feared by the government were taking place nonetheless.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said Friday that the wildcat action had a "significant impact" on the airline's operations in the affected cities.

"We are doing everything we can to get our operation back to normal," Fitzpatrick said.

"We'll see if the protesting employees respect (the injunction)."

He said Air Canada passengers should check ahead on their status of their flight and said any flights that were cancelled can be re-booked at no cost.

"We really appreciate how important it is to our customers that they get to travel on time when they want to," he said. "This is obviously very frustrating for them."

At least 60 Air Canada flights out of Toronto's Pearson International Airport, and 30 out of Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau, had been cancelled or delayed, according to the airports' websites.

Steve Kent, the chief commissioner of Scouts Canada, said he, his wife and infant son were trying to get to Houston from Newfoundland, but had to turn back after an ordeal that left his family stranded in Toronto overnight.

"Two delays last night, eventually made it to Toronto, sat on runway, then no bags," he said in an email to Postmedia News. "Two hours sleep.

"Found bags downstairs this morning. Houston flight cancelled. Now trying to get back home. Air Canada staff have been very helpful. We may fly at lunchtime, but I'm not optimistic."

Reaction online was less sympathetic to the airline and its workers.

"Slowly but surely Air Canada is sucking the life out of me with each flight I take with them," one person wrote on Twitter, adding the hashtag "aircanadasucks."

Added another user: "Keep it up, unionfolk. You'll destroy your own protection walls eventually."

Peel Regional Police in Ontario got a call about the strike Thursday night and arrived to find about 150 workers gathered at the Pearson airport, said Const. Fiona Thivierge.

The workers were "mostly milling about," she said, noting that it was a peaceful demonstration that had already started to disperse.

"It looks more impromptu than anything else," Thivierge said.

"They're yelling and chanting and stuff, but there are no signs and they're not disrupting the flow, which is what we were most concerned with."

Management was on scene, Thivierge said.

On March 13, legislation passed the House of Commons preventing the airline from locking out pilots and blocking any legal strikes from members of its machinists union. Bill C-33, which passed by a vote of 155-124, addresses about 8,600 mechanics, baggage handlers and other ground crew, along with about 3,000 pilots.

The bill passed the Senate two days later.

Last Sunday, Air Canada said it had asked the government's labour relations board to intervene after an unusually large number of pilots called in sick on a busy spring-break weekend, contributing to numerous flight cancellations.

At that time, Queen's University industrial relations professor George C.B. Smith told Postmedia News the disruptions come as no surprise, given the government's imposition of a resolution.

"There's a huge trust that traditionally exists between employers and employees and when that trust is broken, this is one of the potential outcomes."

Smith, a former director of employee relations for Air Canada, told Postmedia News, "This is the part that (Labour Minister Lisa) Raitt doesn't understand. And this is the part that the Harper government doesn't understand, is that you can superficially get this off the table and you can sweep it away, but there some issues that have to be dealt with. And these employees are not going to accept the way this has been dealt with."

(AP) ? A battle for the Republican presidential nomination that slogs on for months more? If that's what it takes for their candidate to prevail, most voters in Tuesday's Illinois GOP primary say it's not a problem.

Less than a third of them want the already prolonged GOP fight to end quickly, even if their favorite loses out, according to preliminary results of an exit poll Tuesday. About two thirds say they're happy to let the contest continue for months more, as long as their candidate comes out on top.

Illinois voters expressed that sentiment with the nomination fight already well into its third month and appearing likely to stretch into April and beyond.

Though former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has a significant lead in rounding up the 1,144 delegates needed to prevail, his chief rivals ? former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich ? have said they're staying in the race until the GOP convention in late August.

Around two-thirds of Illinois voters consider themselves conservative, making it about average among the 17 states where participants in GOP contests have been surveyed so far. About 4 in 10 of them say they are white born-again or evangelical Christians, also putting Illinois toward the middle of the pack by that measure.

Just over half of Illinois voters said it is important to them that they share religious beliefs with a candidate, including nearly a quarter saying that factor made a big difference to them. That made Illinois voters a bit less likely than average among states polled so far to measure a candidate that way.

So far this year, Santorum has done better than Romney among more conservative and religiously driven voters.

The survey also showed continued worries about the economy. One in 5 say the economy is beginning to recover. About a third say it's staying the same, while almost half say it's getting worse.

As usual in state contests so far, the economy is the top issue, with more than half naming it as their premium concern.

And the largest share of voters ? almost 4 in 10 ? wants a candidate who can defeat President Barack Obama, once again a fairly typical response among voters from state to state.

The survey of 1,078 Illinois voters was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. Interviews were conducted as voters left their polling places Tuesday at 35 randomly selected sites. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Travel Insurance Comparisons

Threats are a reality, especially when going abroad, and one should be ready for any accidents or mishaps he encounters. You can neither predict nor prevent such accidents. Your only defense is good travel insurance, purchased before your travel of course.

Travel insurance serves its purpose when it covers unforeseen bills abroad. Most travel insurance includes health services in the package, and this is always a plus for travelers who realize just how much health services can be overseas. If you see a man at the ticket counter yelling about having to pay for another flight because his was delayed, chances are he does not have travel insurance.

There are a lot of vacation travel insurance policies that you can choose from when you need to avail of one. Throughout the selection process, remember that your needs should match the policy you choose. Know which policies will benefit you and hunt only those down.

Keep your trip hitch free with travel insurance. You can be at ease when you choose a good policy. Your itinerary will dictate the kind of insurance you need.

Five primary kinds of travel insurance are available. With all these options, you will definitely find one that suits your needs. Available are single trip, multiple trip, backpacker, senior, and specialized travel insurance.

First, we come to single trip insurance. With single trip insurance, you get the most flexibility. This type allows you to fiddle with policy inclusions to fit the journey?s requirements.

The next category is annual or multiple trip insurance. The good thing about this type is that it is all inclusive and lasts for a year. The bottom line is, within a year, you can go on a zillion trips and stay covered.

Backpacker vacation travel insurance is obviously for backpackers. For those who enjoy long vacations, this category is best. It can cover a backpacker anywhere in the world for a travel period of 31 days to a year.

Elderly holiday travel insurance is of course for senior citizens. Retirees get reasonable, though slightly more expensive, coverage with this category. Those at least 60 years of age can take advantage of these offers.

The last discussion point is specialized travel insurance. If you want to do anything normally unsafe, like kayaking down white water rapids or climbing Mount Everest, choose this type of policy. Only specialized travel insurance will be offered to those planning such dangerous ventures.

185 Yemeni troops dead in weekend al-Qaida attack

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? The death toll from an al-Qaida assault on a military base in southern Yemen has risen to 185 government soldiers, military and medical officials said Tuesday. Many soldiers' bodies were found mutilated and some were headless.

The scale of the army's defeat in the Sunday battle, which appears to be the worst-ever suffered by Yemen's military in its 10-month campaign against al-Qaida in the southern province of Abyan, deals a major blow to efforts by newly-inaugurated Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to uproot the militant movement from the region.

The surprise attack and the mutilations have left government troops "fearful" and with "low morale," according to a senior military official who was part of the defeated force. Another 55 soldiers were captured and paraded through a nearby town by the militants, who lost 32 of their fighters in the assault.

Medical officials in the area confirmed the latest death toll and said some of the bodies of soldiers recovered were missing their heads and bore multiple stab wounds. They said that bodies packed the military hospital morgue to which they were taken, with some taken to vegetable freezers in a military compound for lack of space.

A senior military official said that the attack left his soldiers "fearful of al-Qaida because of the barbarism and brutality of their attack."

"Al-Qaida managed to deal a blow to the army's morale. Imagine how soldiers feel when they see the bodies of their comrades dumped in the desert," he said.

Military officials had earlier said that militants overran the base and captured armored vehicles and artillery pieces, which they turned on the army.

The official said the soldiers were taken unaware.

"It was a massacre and it came by surprise as the soldiers were asleep," he said. Militants sneaked behind army lines and attacked from the rear where there was "zero surveillance."

The attack appeared to be a response to a pledge by President Hadi to fight the Yemeni branch of al-Qaida, believed to be the most active of the militant movement's subsidiary networks.

Hadi took power last month from longtime ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh as part of power-transfer deal backed by the United States and initiated by Arab Gulf countries.

The year-long uprising against Saleh had caused a deterioration of central state authority throughout the country, and allowed al-Qaida to seize Zinjibar in May and fight off repeated army offensives to retake it.

The U.S. had hoped that replacing Saleh would take some pressure off of Yemen's government and military, who also confront tribal and separatist insurgencies, and allow them to fight back more effectively against the militants.

Despite the defeat, and a surge of other attacks by al-Qaida, Hadi has continued to pledge to fight the militants. "The confrontation will continue until we are rid of the last terrorist, whether in Abyan or elsewhere," the Yemeni media quoted him as saying on Monday.

But he may not yet have the means at his disposal to do so: the military official in Zinjibar said the forces routed by al-Qaida on Tuesday were poorly equipped, and that better-trained, better-armed specialized anti-terrorist units needed to be brought to the front.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of military protocol or because they were not allowed to speak to the media.

Anglers flock to contaminated Texas reservoir (AP)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]AP - Signs bearing a skull and crossbones dot the banks of a reservoir and canal near this town on the U.S.-Mexico border, but the fishermen standing in the reeds nearby ignore them, casually reeling in fish that are contaminated with toxic chemicals and banned for human consumption.

How to Live a Healthy Life | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

You cannot control the family you?ve been given. But you can create your own. Lyon said that she has many clients who come from a difficult childhood where family members were abusive, physically dangerous and emotionally harmful. She said longitudinal studies show people who have been humiliated, abused or neglected ?are at a much higher risk of dying at a younger age and developing a complex chronic condition.?So how do you reap the benefits of having a supportive family if your own family continues to be abusive or toxic? Create your own. Find friends and even older people who can act as parental figures for you. ?Rather than encouraging you to, let?s say, drink to excess or use drugs, they would actually support you making healthier choices for yourself. Instead of holding you up for ridicule, this would actually be about doing something good for yourself.?

Be positive to learn the rest of this article. You?ll find them to be useful whether you?re considering figuring out more about basic health or more particular matters like thyroid essentials reviews. You never know what may happen after reading this article. The free suggestions listed here could also be simply what you?ll want to revolutionize your health routine.

Bone health is more often mentioned in relation to women?s health than men?s. But after the age of 30, men?s bone mass begins to decline. This can lead to a greater chance of suffering fractures ? and with all those softball game slides and ?touch? football tackles, that?s not something guys can really afford.

Three things that can help make your life more balanced: 1) Get your environment under control so it optimally supports your wellness; 2) Eat meals at regular times as your body thrives with this routine; 3) Remember to breathe, and spend time daily focusing on deep, relaxing breaths whenever you can

Start your day with a healthy breakfast, such as fruit juice, low-fat milk, yogurt, high fiber cereal, and fruit. People who diet high fiber foods digest slowly. As a result, the hunger will be delayed and the desire to eat fatty foods will decrease too.

It?s time to heed your partner?s complaints and get that snoring checked out. Loud, incessant snores are one of the main symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). University of Alabama researchers found that many sleep apnea sufferers also had high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that can boost blood pressure. In fact, it?s estimated that half of all people with sleep apnea have high blood pressure. Go get your self or your partner checked if you are experiencing these.

Vigorous work-outs ? when you?re breathing hard and sweating ? help your heart pump better, give you more energy and help you look and feel best. Start with a warm-up that stretches your muscles. Include 20 minutes of aerobic activity, such as running, jogging, or dancing. Follow-up with activities that help make you stronger such as push-ups or lifting weights. Then cool-down with more stretching and deep breathing.

We all know that eating fresh, homemade products are good for us, yet many of us are far too tired to be whipping up a culinary masterpiece after a hard day?s work. However, rather than falling into the trap of relying on ready to eat meals which may be lacking in nutritional value, try making your own healthy versions instead. By cooking up healthy meals in large batches at weekends, you can be sure to have plenty of healthy choices in your freezer for those days when you?re too lazy to cook.
