Betraeus ? walkingaround

I was surprised to hear of David Petraeus? affair.? I think it could have been a really big deal.? He could have had an affair with a foreign spy?national security could have been compromised.? His affair could have been used to manipulate him or the information and the lives he protected.? I think.

As this story unfolds (unceasingly) on tv and in the news I?m realizing, though, that this story isn?t about the potential security breach.? This story is juicy?like Justin Bieber breaking up with Selena Gomez juicy.? And that?s it.? This high-powered official had an affair.

I?m sad, of course, for the whole situation because I imagine there to have been long-standing brokenness in all of these relationships, but really, I don?t need to know all of this.? I get why the guy quit, but I?m not mad.? I?m not ?enraged,? or ?righteously indignant? about this guy and his affair. A lot of people have affairs and I don?t have strong compunction about that. I just don?t.

For me,? being in relationship is a mysterious affair.? How two people work out their own inter-being is between them.? Being in an intimate relationship is the hardest work I think we humans do, so I tend to err on the side of gentleness rather than judgement.? I am not so good at it myself, having walked through the carnage and devastation of divorce.

I am not so bothered by affairs, although I do have my feminist rants (do NOT get me started on men).?? Some couples do stay together for decades?60 years or more.? I think that is amazing!? Some couples stay together for 60 years or more even with the presence of an affair.? I think that is amazing, too.? I like the story of George Burns and Gracie Allen.? When he cheated on her with a Vegas showgirl, George in his guilt bought Gracie an expensive coffee table she wanted.? Years later, she quipped to one of her friends that she wished George would cheat on her again; she needed a new coffee table.? A relationship is mysterious and bitter and sweet, and such a gift.? we learn to be human by being human together, sometimes naked, and sometimes with more than one person.? It takes a lot of courage to spend your life on one path and realize that you have to turn and go a different way.

So, it is not this illustrious General,? who has ?let us down? or ?betrayed us? with his affair.

He has betrayed us with his normal, ?model life.?

A few days before the Petraeus affair hit the news, the Minneapolis paper published articles of a local, ?pray away the gay,? pastor being changed with molesting the men he was counseling,* and the story of another priest molesting young men in his parish.? I am more devastated and outraged by these stories (and there are a lot of them) than I am by people who act out of the norm and admit it.?? I am righteously outraged by people who cripple other people with the vice grip of moral standards they themselves cannot uphold.?? May we not hide, for in our hiding, I think our hearts turn hard.

It is a truth, I have come to see, that Life is so complicated, messy if you will, that those who gleam with clean living, are probably lying.? Don?t lie, Petraeus people.? Don?t lie to other people and don?t lie to yourself.

As for me, one of my parishioners, told me the other day that I am a ?strange duck.?? I laughed.? She laughed, because it was true!? I am a strange duck, to whom strange and perplexing things happen.? I know it!? and she knows it, too.

When It Pays To Refinance Your Mortgage ... - Real Estate Marbles

Nov

November 13, 2012 | Leave a Comment

Why Refinance

To refinance a mortgage means to pay off your existing loan and replace it with a new one.

There are many reasons why homeowners opt to refinance, from obtaining a lower interest rate, to shortening the term of the loan, to switching mortgage loan types, to tapping into home equity.

Each has its considerations.

Lower Your Mortgage Rate
Among the best reasons to refinance is to get access to lower mortgage rates. There is no ?rule of thumb? that says how far rates should drop for a refinance to be sensible. Compare your closing costs to your monthly savings, and determine whether the math makes sense for your situation.

Shorten Your Loan Term
Refinancing your 30-year fixed rate mortgage to a 20-year fixed rate or a 15-year fixed rate is a sensible way to reduce your long-term mortgage costs, and to own your home sooner. As a bonus, with mortgage rates currently near all-time lows, an increase to your monthly payment from a shorter loan term may be negligible.

Convert ARM To Fixed Rate Mortgage
Homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages may want the comfort of a fixed-rate payment. Mortgage rates for fixed-rate mortgages are often higher than for comparable ARMs so be prepared to pay more to your lender each month.

Access Equity For Projects, Debts, Or Other Reasons
Called a ?cash out? refinance, Santa Rosa homeowners can sometimes use home equity to retire debts, pay for renovations, or use for other purposes including education costs and retirement. Lenders place restrictions on loans of this type.

A refinanced home loan can help you reach specific financial goals or just put extra cash in your pocket each month ? just make sure that there?s a clear benefit to you. Paying large closing costs for small monthly savings or negligible long-term benefit should be avoided.

Many lenders offer low- or no-closing costs options for refinancing. Be sure to ask about it.

CU-NOAA study shows summer climate change, mostly warming

Analysis of 90 years of observational data has revealed that summer climates in regions across the globe are changing -- mostly, but not always, warming --according to a new study led by a scientist from the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences headquartered at the University of Colorado Boulder.

"It is the first time that we show on a local scale that there are significant changes in summer temperatures," said lead author CIRES scientist Irina Mahlstein. "This result shows us that we are experiencing a new summer climate regime in some regions."

The technique, which reveals location-by-location temperature changes rather than global averages, could yield valuable insights into changes in ecosystems on a regional scale. Because the methodology relies on detecting temperatures outside the expected norm, it is more relevant to understand changes to the animal and plant life of a particular region, which scientists would expect to show sensitivity to changes that lie outside of normal variability.

"If the summers are actually significantly different from the way that they used to be, it could affect ecosystems," said Mahlstein, who works in the Chemical Sciences Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory.

To identify potential temperature changes, the team used climate observations recorded from 1920 to 2010 from around the globe. The scientists termed the 30-year interval from 1920 to 1949 the "base period," and then compared the base period to other 30-year test intervals starting every 10 years since 1930.

The comparison used statistics to assess whether the test interval differed from the base period beyond what would be expected due to yearly temperature variability for that geographical area.

Their analysis found that some changes began to appear as early as the 1960s, and the observed changes were more prevalent in tropical areas. In these regions, temperatures varied little throughout the years, so the scientists could more easily detect any changes that did occur, Mahlstein said.

The scientists found significant summer temperature changes in 40 percent of tropical areas and 20 percent of higher-latitude areas. In the majority of cases, the researchers observed warming summer temperatures, but in some cases they observed cooling summer temperatures.

"This study has applied a new approach to the question, 'Has the temperature changed in local areas?' " Mahlstein said. The study is in press in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union.

The study's findings are consistent with other approaches used to answer the same question, such as modeling and analysis of trends, Mahlstein said. But this technique uses only observed data to come to the same result. "Looking at the graphs of our results, you can visibly see how things are changing," she said.

In particular the scientists were able to look at the earlier time periods, note the temperature extremes, and observe that those values became more frequent in the later time periods. "You see how the extreme events of the past have become a normal event," Mahlstein said.

The scientists used 90 years of data for their study, a little more than the average lifespan of a human being. So if inhabitants of those areas believe that summers have changed since they were younger, they can be confident it is not a figment of their imagination.

"We can actually say that these changes have happened in the lifetime of a person," Mahlstein said.

China slams Dalai Lama; Tibetan self-immolates

BEIJING (AP) ? China accused the Dalai Lama on Monday of allying with Japanese right-wingers in an island dispute as a way of attacking China and blamed him for glorifying a wave of self-immolations among Tibetans. The comments came as another Tibetan set himself on fire to protest Chinese rule, Tibetan exiles and a rights group said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said the Dalai Lama's comments in Japan on the island dispute showed his "reactionary nature" and determination to split China apart under the guise of religion.

"To achieve his separatist goal, he associated with the Japanese right-wing forces. Chinese people despise him for what he did. We are firmly opposed to any country's providing a stage for him," Hong said.

Chinese media have said the Dalai Lama called the islands by their Japanese name during a news conference in Yokohama last Monday but an Associated Press review of a tape of the event showed he referred to them only as "the islands."

On Monday in Okinawa, the Dalai Lama criticized Chinese media for making up a claim that he sided with the Japanese.

Tensions have run high over the islands, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, since the Japanese government nationalized some of them in September in a bid to prevent Tokyo's right-wing governor from buying them. Violent anti-Japanese protests broke out in a number of Chinese cities, and Beijing has sent ships to conduct near-constant patrols near the uninhabited rocks.

Hong also attacked the Dalai Lama for reportedly accusing the Chinese government of failing to investigate the root cause of despair and hopelessness among Tibetans that many say have prompted people to take their lives as a form of protest. China has long accused the Dalai Lama and his supporters of inspiring such acts, despite his condemnation of all forms of violence.

"Not only did the Dalai not condemn them, but he actually glorified these acts, which are against the national law and religious principles," Hong said.

The remarks came as a 24-year-old Tibetan man set himself on fire at a prayer ceremony in Tongren county in western China's Qinghai province, becoming the seventh person in six days to self-immolate in the region, the rights group Free Tibet said.

Nyingkar Tashi is reported to have died in the protest in which he called out for freedom in Tibet and for the longevity of the Dalai Lama, the group said. A statement from the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharmsala, India, provided similar details.

A Tongren government official who picked up the phone said he could not comment, while Ma Chunyin, head of the Tongren Communist Party Propaganda Department, said he did not know about the reported self-immolation.

Tibet support groups overseas have said the increase in protests in recent days is meant to highlight Tibetan unhappiness with Chinese rule as the country's leaders hand over power to younger successors at a party congress in Beijing.

"Throughout the 18th Party Congress the new unelected leaders have been reminded on an almost daily basis of Tibetans' rejection of Chinese rule, and of the terrible failure of policies to cement the occupation," Free Tibet Director Stephanie Brigden said.

The Dalai Lama fled to India following an abortive 1959 uprising against Chinese rule over Tibet. He denies seeking the region's independence, saying that he wishes Tibetans to enjoy real autonomy and protection of their traditional Buddhist culture.

Microsoft Slashes Prices On Yammer - Business Insider

Microsoft today laid out its grand strategy for Yammer, the social enterprise startup it bought over the summer for $1.2 billion.

Step 1: Slash prices.

Step 2: Bake it into Microsoft's cloud-based software.

Step 3: Convince people to use it.

Microsoft announced the changes as part of its?SharePoint Conference 2012, which kicks off today in Las Vegas.

Yammer had four pricing plans. Microsoft cut those down to two, a freebie version most companies use, and the "enterprise network" plan, which costs $3 per user a month. It used to cost five times that?$15 per user a month.

More importantly, Microsoft has made Yammer a feature in two of its cloud software products. Those are SharePoint Online, a cloud-hosted version of Microsoft's content-management software, and Office 365, the cloud version of its Microsoft Office suite, which includes SharePoint Online.

However, Microsoft will only sell the Yammer-SharePoint combo to companies who already have an Enterprise Agreement, the standard way Microsoft sells software to big businesses,?says Jared Spataro, senior director, Office Division.

It's less clear how Microsoft intends to integrate Yammer with the standard version of SharePoint, which generally runs on customers' servers or servers maintained by a third-party provider. The recently released SharePoint 2013 has its own Yammer-like news feed. But even before the acquisition, Yammer was integrating its software into SharePoint, and recently announced software tools should make it easy to deepen that integration.

SharePoint Online, Office 365, and Yammer will have a "unified identity, integrated document management, and feed aggregation." Yammer recently unveiled tools for taking its identity and feeds to other Web-based software, so it seems likely those unified offerings will be based strongly on Yammer's products.

Microsoft is also answering criticisms that people don't want a version of Facebook for work?a common caricature of Yammer. Instead of a way for sharing frivolous-seeming updates, they want tools that will measurably help them be more productive.

"If you want to realize the potential of social networking, you have to get people to participate," Spataro said. "They can't just sign up and walk away.? They have to use it." He added that Microsoft thinks Yammer's social feed combined with SharePoint's document handling is the ticket to success.

One thing we can't expect: Any word of how Yammer will integrate with another Microsoft acquisition, Skype, the video-chat and instant-messaging service, reports?Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet.

How Fit Is Your Family? Your Health Journal | Your ... - Len Saunders

From Everyday Health?..

Test your whole-family fitness with these simple tests for strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and more.

It?s never too early to give your children a love of exercise. Unfortunately, with the proliferation of video games, computers, and other electronic media, you may need to do more coaxing and cajoling than ever before. You may also be concerned with their level of fitness.

Luckily, there are some simple fitness tests you can use to measure your kids? health ? and even make it fun for them. ?These fitness assessments help children get in tune with their bodies and experience physical challenges,? says Noelle Rox, an ACE-certified personal trainer and Pilates instructor. ?It is important to keep the tests simple to focus on the positive rather than the negative and help kids develop a positive attitude toward physical activity.?

For bonus fitness points, try these tests alongside your kid for a fun, whole-family fitness assessment. Most tests are appropriate for kids ages 5 and up.

Walk the Plank for Balance

This is an easy and fun test for kids to try. ?A flat balance beam on the floor or simply walking a line drawn or taped on the floor works great,? Rox says.

How to do it: Have your child place one foot in front of the other and try to stay in as straight a line as possible as he makes his way across the ?plank.?

Scoring: If he makes it across without any missteps, it?s a sign of good balance. More mistakes means more practice is needed to focus on maintaining balance.

Super Moves for Strength

Rox gave this test its name so that kids will feel empowered to see all the cool things their bodies can do ? just like a super hero.

How to do it: Super Moves consists of three phases: First, holding your child?s feet, see how many situps she can do in one minute. Then have her do as many modified pushups (with knees on the floor) as she can in 1 minute. Finally, have her jump next to a wall and reach as high as she can three times in a row.

Scoring: The more situps and pushups a child can do and the higher she can jump, the stronger she is. Same goes for adults.

Independence students take battle with obesity to South Carolina ...

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Kimberly Kuhlman clings to a portrait of her 11-year-old son Cameron. She misses him dearly, but she knows that pain will be worth it. The hard part is balancing emotions when he calls.

?Usually the first thing is 'I miss you and I want to come home,?? she says. ?And it's hard because at this point I'm ready to scream 'Me too!??

One thousand miles away, Cameron says that homesickness is tough.

?I mean, there are days when I just want to wake up at home ?cause I miss my family so much.?

But Cameron remains steadfast in his goals. He left his Independence home two and a half months ago in a decision he and his mom made together. When he returns for the Christmas holidays, he expects to be a much different young man.

?So, that's why I'm here,? he explains. ?Saving my life.?

Cameron is one of 13 students from the Independence Public School District spending the semester at MindStream Academy in Bluffton, S.C. Spread across 43 acres, MindStream is located on a former Arabian horse farm. As the sun rises over the ancient oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, smoke floats gently across the water of the lake that sits just east of the giant stables and riding arena.

Yes, this is a boarding school, but it?s not a school for students of wealth and privilege. These students see their stay as one amazing and perhaps final opportunity to save their lives.

Emily Beers is in the eighth grade: ?I want to lose at least 80 pounds, and I've already lost 30.?

Jason Alexander is a junior who wants desperately to follow his family members into the United States Marines. Unfortunately, he won?t qualify unless he loses more than 100 pounds.

?I've lost 50 so far so,? he says proudly.

Junior Teah Gentry smiles as she explains one of the few downsides of trying to lose a big percentage of her weight ? loose-fitting pants.

?Pants sizes, they're going down! They're going down,? she laughs.

The 13 Independence students range in age from 11 to 17. The district selected them from a group of more than 100 identified as being severely overweight.

?Really, for us, education is about educating about life,? explains Superintendent Dr. Jim Hinson. ?And so when we look at what's going on in the lives of our kids today, whether it's social or emotional, behavioral, certainly their physical health issues, part of our responsibility is to help them have a better quality of life.?

Cameron, like his peers, is here to take charge of his young life. He admits it was not an easy decision.

?How hard was it for you to get on the plane and come here?? I ask.

?It was really hard,? he replies.

?Why did you do it??

?I did it for me and my family.?

That road to a new lifestyle includes hours of daily fitness packed into a day already filled with academics and other curriculum. On this morning the students are spread across the field that borders the lake. They run from station to station, performing the corresponding exercise with their partners. The cheers, grunts, yells and labored breathing can be heard from one end of the field to the other.

The students not only increase their strength and endurance, they are also learning team work and acceptance. These are important factors to many who say they grew up harassed or even bullied because of their weight.

?Second grade," Cameron recalls, ?if not first when I got picked on.?

?What did people say?? I ask.

?I just didn't really care in first. There was just a couple kids you know, there was just a couple kids, but we got it all straightened out,? he said.

The packed schedule includes a variety of activities to teach the students how to process the stress that comes with bullying. Once a week, the students travel off campus for Mixed Martial Arts. Outfitted with gloves and in their bare feet, they run, jump, kick, wrestle and slam punching bags. The stress relieving workout offers ways to overcome the triggers that can lead to anger and overeating.

Proper nutrition is a huge part of the MindStream curriculum as well. The students participate in meal planning, preparation, cooking and cleanup. They even tend a giant garden where they grow their own fruits and vegetables. Portion sizes and ingredients are key, Cameron explains, as he praises Chef Tim Teasdale.

?I like our Chef Tim. He makes the best food ever. And he makes it so filling,? he says. ?I mean, it's the exact same portions, and he makes it less calories and he makes it a lot healthier.?

?These kids are being educated so that if they're left to their own designs, if you will, they'll know how to take care of themselves,? explains founder and CEO Ray Travaglione.

Travaglione?s mission in life has been connecting young people to their passions through education. He developed the MindStream Academy program to be sustainable long after the students are home.

?They're taste buds are changing, their want for sugar and sodium has been dramatically diminished,? he says. ?They're in such a good place that maintaining it is probably just as easy

as going back to where they were.?

Back home in Independence, Kimberly Kuhlman stares at the closed door to Cameron?s bedroom.

?This is his room,? she says.

?You keep it closed when he's not here?? I ask.

?I do,? she sighs, as she opens the door and steps inside the bright-colored room she painted purple at Cameron?s request for his last birthday. This is a lifestyle change for her and other parents as well. Parents receive weekly emails from MindStream to incorporate the entire family into their student's new lifestyle.

?A lot of it, I'd have to say, is my fault,? Kuhlman, a single mother, says. ?I would say that it would probably go back to the economics end of it. I've always had to work a lot, and I've been away from home a lot.?

Sometimes working three jobs to put food on the table, Cameron is often left to prepare that food himself. Kuhlman admits easy and safe doesn?t always equal healthy.

?He learned early on, I'd buy things that were easy to prepare or already prepared. Just microwaveable. Things that took very little preparation,? she says.

Cameron says being on his own, coupled with a frustration over his weight, often led him to eat more.

?Like if I was out with friends, I'd go home, grab my wallet. ?Let's go to Taco Bell boys!? Cause I could ride my bike up to Taco Bell,? he explains.

As Cameron?s weight drops, Kimberly promises to do everything in her power to help him succeed. A doctor's haunting words echo in both their heads.

?The doctor said I wouldn't live past 21,? Cameron says stoically.

Kuhlman shudders as she repeats the story.

?There was a lot of discussion on the 50 pounds a year that he was putting on gradually through the physician that had told us at that rate, if his knees and heart held up, that by the time he reached 21, he would weigh over 700 pounds.?

Her voice quivers as tears well up in her eyes.

?I am hoping that in everything that he has already achieved, that I can do anything and everything that it takes to help him keep going,? she says. ?And I would love for him to have the dream that I think all parents have for their children and that is to achieve anything that his heart desires.?

Cameron?s goal is to become a major league baseball player. MindStream?s goal is to get him on and keep him on the right path to realize that dream.

?This has never been done before. This is an unthinkable model, if you will,? explains Travaglione. ?But if we're going to make a difference, and we're going to affect one child at a time, this is probably the new paradigm going forward.?

That?s why the MindStream staff works to transform the entire child. Back at the stables, the school?s Equine Therapy program brings these students up close and personal with something most students have never experienced. They learn the connection conflict resolution and communication skills to their own relationships.

?When they walk in to working with the horses, we talk about the herd of horses,? explains Mental Health Therapist Ann O'Brien. ?You know, who's in charge? Who's the dynamic horse? Who's the one that's stirring the pot? Is there one that's a bully right now??

The students brush them, saddle them, walk them and love them. When they?re stubborn and frustrating, they work around them. When they return home, these are life lessons the students will hopefully remember long after their academic textbooks have long been forgotten.

Sitting back on the dock overlooking the lake, Cameron explains that his goal is to lose 100 pounds. He?s about a third of the way there. Eight weeks down ? eight weeks to go.

?They've been rough. It's not easy,? he tells me.

I ask him, ?Knowing how hard it is here, if you had to do it all over again, would you still come??

?I'd definitely come back!?

Do You Need A Link Popularity Tool

Before discussing the link popularity tool, let?s discuss link popularity itself. What is it? Link popularity basically refers to the total number of web pages which link to your web site or any of its individual pages. The reason it is so important is because this is one of the main factors that search engines use to evaluate your website and where it will be ranked. If your website is ranked high with the search engines, you will come up in the first results when a potential customer goes online and searches for what your business offers. That?s why webmasters are concerned with their link popularity.

So what is a link popularity tool? It depends on the tool. There are many facets to link popularity and link building so there are tools that correspond to those aspects. Some tools will perform an analysis on the various search engines to show you how many pages are linking to your site. They can also tell you which pages are linking. Some will actually give you a score so you can judge how well you are doing. Some will give you the opportunity to compare your site to others. Most free tools will only give you the results from the biggest search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

You?ll probably notice that the amount of links varies significantly from search engine to search engine because the figures displayed represent the number of inbound-links that are known to each search engine in particular and will vary based on the size of its database. Search engines also figure out certain inbound-links (again, this varies according to the search engine) so certain backlinks may not figure into the total.

While you don?t want to become obsessed with using this tool or checking the data all the time, it is important to keep tabs on your links. You want to keep your links as high-quality and relevant as possible and knowing where they are coming from can help you manage that information.

After you analyze the information that you get from your tool, you can then continue on with your link building strategy. Many tools are also connected or related to other services that can help you with this realm of link-building as well. Just remember that the same rules apply if you should decide to go with a link building service to take care of that aspect of your business. You want to get a quality service so make sure you do your research in order to get the most bang for your buck. While many link-building tools are free, link building services are definitely not. However, what they save you in time and effort could very much be worth it in terms of cash.

By all means, take advantage of a link popularity tool and then decide if you plan to go as far as to hire someone else to handle your backlink strategy.

Thanks for your kind interest, and We wish you the best in business and life,

Is housework a health hazard? Sheet-fitting palsy described by physicians

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? What do a tight, fitted bed sheet and a blood clot in the wrist have in common? Both are associated with a condition called sheet fitting palsy. True to its name, the palsy is reported in those who spend a long period of time repeatedly trying to pull a fitted bed sheet over the corner of a mattress. But it has also been reported in basketball players and in those who do push-ups as exercise.

The injury is caused by the continuous flexing movement of the wrist and results in a tiny stroke in the artery to the hand. The resulting clot cuts off blood flow to the median nerve and produces symptoms that include numbness or weakness.

A case study was described recently by Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center neurologist Francis O. Walker, M.D., and colleagues, and published in the September edition of the Journal of Clinical Neuromuscular Disease.

The case involved a fit and active 73-year-old woman, who was a bit miffed last fall when she had to depend on her granddaughter to help her with some housework. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't slip the last corner of a fitted sheet over a mattress. Sometimes she noticed a 'pins and needles' feeling in her hand, but didn't think anything of it. After shaking her hand for a while, the numbness would go away.

A few weeks later, facing the fitted sheet task without her granddaughter to help her, the woman tried for some time to move the sheet over the mattress without success. When she moved her hand from the sheet her thumb dropped down, limp. That's when she called her doctor, Mary F. Lyles, M.D.

On examination, Lyles saw that her patient had lost most of the ability to perform simple tasks such as tying a shoelace or buttoning a sleeve with her right hand. Suspecting acute carpel tunnel syndrome, Lyles called on neurologist Walker to perform nerve conduction studies and image the hand using ultrasound. Few physicians have seen what Walker saw in the study. "High resolution color flow Doppler showed a rare persistent median artery that had blood flow in it in the forearm, but not at the wrist where it was next to a swollen, injured, median nerve." The patient is among the five percent of people who have persistent median artery, a vessel that usually disappears after birth.

Shortly after her tests, the patient underwent surgery to relieve some of the pressure on the nerve, but her limp thumb persisted. The woman's surgeon advised her to strengthen the thumb by going through the motions of performing her everyday activities. Even if a patient can't do them, trying the daily tasks can help. Little by little, the strategy worked. At first she was successful picking up a paper clip. When she could open and close a chip clip, she knew she was back to normal. It had taken nearly a year for the nerve in the wrist to grow the new pathways that allowed her thumb to function.

For those with persistent median artery, repetitive motion can mean trauma to the wrist and lead to severe symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. And something as simple as making a bed can be a hazard, especially if the fitted sheet does not fit.

Wake Forest Baptist co-authors in the journal case study are Mary F. Lyles, M.D., and Zhongu Li, M.D., Ph.D.
